Synopsis:

Agamemnon is about energy of a different kind, but overlaps with my play East. It is filtered through my own impression of Greece and is rooted more in the elements of landscape and sea.. It is also about heat and battle, fatigue, the marathon and the obscenity of modern and future wars. Naturally it is about the body and its pleasures and pains. I followed Aeschylus but chose to take my own route from time to time. Events smudge into each other and I have used from the Feast of Atreus the ghastly origins of the curse. This is a suitable horrific beginning, though horror was not what I wanted but a revelation of the crime. I described it as if it had happened to me.The final text evolved after a long workshop series during which the actors turned themselves into athletes, soldiers, horses and chorus. The text was chanted, spoken, sung, and simply acted, l am really grateful to two actors (Wolf Kahler and Barry Philips) who started the first day (sometime in April 1973) and finished with me on the 21st August.

Synopsis:

Historically, English adaptations of Aeschylus's Agamemnon have rendered its ancient Greek poetry into proven English poetic forms. The original Greek meters provide clues as to how a section of a play was performed (sung, spoken, or spoken to musical accompaniment). This has prompted Alexander Harrington, a director known for his mastery of oratorical theater, to attempt something radical: approximating Aeschylus' actual, original poetic meters in a new translation. The actors' faces will be painted to achieve the sculptural severity of masks while allowing for facial expression.

In CSI's 2011 production of 'Iphigenia in Aulis' Clytemnestra swore vengeance on her husband Agamemnon for sacrificing their daughter, Iphigenia - all so that his ships could sail to conquer Troy. Agamemnon now returns in triumph and Clytemnestra, appearing to have forgotten her vow of vengeance, greets him with shows of overwhelming joy. But her true intent is yet to be revealed; when she invites her husband to enter the palace on a river of bloodred cloth a great foreboding fills the hearts of the city elders. The curse on the royal house of Argos is not yet broken. . . - http://www.irishplayography.com/play.aspx?playid=3784

Synopsis:

"Alas...you are the snake I bore and nourished..." The House of Atreus is rotting under the weight of atrocities committed by the family. Orestes has arrived home to avenge his father's murder and reverse the curse of his ancestors. But can he justify killing his mother? Even in the name of God? A physical adaptation of Aeschylus' The Libation Bearers updated to 2012. It's 2012 and Orestes, the last son of the Atreus dynasty, arrives home with revenge in his heart. According to God, he must now kill his mother in order to avenge his fathers death and reverse the curse on his house. Along the way he meets his sister Electra who has been praying for his return. Orestes is torn between obligation to his religion and family and his individual morals. When he finally confronts his mother in the flesh, will he be able to shed her blood? Will he end the curse of the House of Atreus? What are the consequences of such an atrocious act as matricide? In this highly physical adaptation, we explore Orestes' internal conflicts and the influence of organized religion, as relevant now as it was in 458 BC. "Men never do evil so completely and cheerfully as when they do it from religious convictio" -n Pascal 1623-1662

Original Playwright - Aeschylus. Translated by J Michael Walton and Marianne MacDonald. This is a new translation of Aeschylus The Oresteia, commissioned by Nick Hern Books as an addition to the Greek tragedy section of Drama Classics, others of which include Sophocles Antigone (tr. McDonald) and Electra (tr. McDonald and Walton), and Euripides Andromache (tr. McDonald and Walton), Bacchae (tr. McLeish), Electra (tr. McDonald and Walton), Hecuba (tr. McDonald), Medea (tr. McLeish) and Women of Troy (tr. McLeish).

Synopsis:

The Oresteia is the only surviving trilogy from the classical repertoire. The first play, Agamemnon, deals with the return home from Troy to Argos of the victorious leader of the Greek army, only to meet his death at the hands of his wife, Clytemnestra. Choephori (Libation-Bearers), set several years later, describes the vengeance exacted by Agamemnon's exiled son, Orestes, on his mother and her lover, Aegisthus. In the third play, The Eumenides, (The Kindly Ones), Orestes, pursued by the Furies roused by his mother's ghost, stands trial for matricide in Athens at a newly-created court of justice and is acquitted by the casting vote of the goddess Athene. The thwarted Furies are persuaded to become benign deities and the rule of law supersedes the primitive rule of personal vendetta.

Oresteia

A radical reinvention of the classic tale of justice and mercy. Before setting out for the Trojan War, King Agamemnon sacrificed his daughter Iphigenia. Many years later, when Agamemnon returns to his palace, his adulterous Queen Clytemnestra takes her revenge by brutally murdering him and installing her lover on the throne. How will the gods judge Orestes, their estranged son, who must continue the endless cycle of revenge by murdering his mother? Perfectly suited to the outdoor arena of the Globe, this innovative new adaptation is the original and ultimate tale of justice and mercy. Adele Thomas (The Knight of the Burning Pestle) directs this thrilling three-act adaptation of the original epic trilogy, newly adapted for the Globe by Rory Mullarkey (winner of the prestigious George Devine Award for his play The Wolf from the Door at the Royal Court).

Synopsis:

Aeschylus' play is an extraordinary exploration of ambition, adventure and failure, and a powerful family tragedy. It recounts the story of the return to his homeland of the defeated Persian king, Xerxes. In this revival, Mike Pearson will stage the action in the rich setting of a military training area in the Brecon hills. On the edge of the Epynt hills near Brecon, the British Army has built a village - no-one lives there. It is a mock-up in which troops train for urban warfare. In an unprecedented move, the Ministry of Defence has permitted National Theatre Wales a unique residency on the site. For the first time, audiences will be transported across the military ranges to the remote village called Cilieni, where they will witness the tragedy of The Persians played out in a haunting contemporary setting. In houses with walls missing, amid burned out tanks and spent shell cases, Europe's oldest drama will unfold.

Original Playwright - Aeschylus

Synopsis:

For many years the Prometheus Bound was attributed to Aeschylus, but modern scholarship will have it that this attribution is not correct. Be that as it may, this powerful play has become one of the most influential pieces of ancient drama in its impact upon the whole western tradition of art, literature and philosophy. One play surviving from a trilogy, the piece depicts the initial crucifixion of the culture hero, the Titan, Prometheus, on an icy mountain top in the Caucasus. He is punished in this way by the new-come ruler of the gods, Zeus, for having given the divine and civilizing power of fire to mere creatures of a day, to mortal men. Prometheus is the archetypal tragic hero, noble and generous, yet also stubborn, proud and self-willed and punished for what his detractors and even his allies consider to be a fatal mistake, an excess of kind heartedness towards humankind. On his mountain peak Prometheus is visited in turn by a Chorus of sympathetic daughters of Okeanos, by the elder statesman Okeanos himself, intent on trying, though unsuccessfully, to heal the rift between Prometheus and Zeus, by Io, a human girl, the object of Zeus' lust and so a fellow victim with Prometheus of Zeus' uncontrolled emotions and, finally, by Hermes, Zeus' messenger and lackey who threatens Prometheus with further dire punishment should he refuse to divulge what secret knowledge he possesses about the cosmic future and the threat to the rule of Zeus. Through time Prometheus has been identified as a culture hero, to whom the figure of Maui provides a Polynesian parallel, as a romantic hero, the rugged individual confronting the hostile forces of nature and, indeed, as a Marxist hero, upholding and defending the rights of the common man. He is all and more than these things and the play, at once static and strangely dynamic, explores matters metaphysical and political and ethical which still resonate today in language at once grand and rhetorical, but compelling and clear.

Synopsis:

As the ideal of democracy is again put to the test in Canada, many feel that the parties representing 'the people' come nowhere near representing the true voice of the masses. Are we powerless to change this? How can one voice change the world? Beyond the parties and the slogans and the fierce, empty words, are the people. There is always a human side, where families are broken, loves lost and farms burned. The moment he spoke out he was tried, judged and sentenced to hang like a torn banner of what he once was. Prometheus - the true revolutionary - festers in the bowels of the earth, where he questions how much progress man has made through time and what happens to the few who stand steadfast behind their ideals in the face of people relinquishing the burden of fighting for social change. But beyond these larger issues lie the people that have been wronged, and the humanity behind the politik becomes frighteningly real when those who are forgotten - the mad Io, cynical Worker, sympathetic Farmer - are given the choice to act or to remain silent and unheard. Beyond the groan of a deposed god lie the cries of the people who loved him. The furies are larger than life, the gods are clowns, and the people are far too real. And in the middle is Prometheus - a titan of morality and justice, yet flawed in his pride. He must embody his immortality and the responsibility that curses it. He must choose how his name and spirit will live on before he fades into the dust of history.

Original Playwright - Aeschylus in a version by David Greig

Suppliant Women, The

Fifty women board a boat in North Africa. They flee across the Mediterranean, leaving everything behind. They are escaping forced marriage in their home and seeking asylum in Greece. Written 2,500 years ago, The Suppliant Women is one of the worlds oldest plays. Its about the plight of refugees, about moral and human rights, civil war, democracy and ultimately the triumph of love. It tells a story that echoes down the ages to find striking and poignant resonance today. Featuring in performance a chorus of local women, this is part play, part ritual, part theatrical archaeology. It explores fundamental questions of humanity: who are we, where do we belong and, if all goes wrong, who will take us in?
