Alice Austen is a 2012 -13 member of the Goodman Playwright's Unit, a 2012 Hangar Theatre Resident, a Resident Playwright at Chicago Dramatists, and a member of Shanghai Low theatricals. She is a past recipient of a Residency from the Royal Court Theatre (London) and a 2007 Joseph Jefferson Award Nomination (Best New Work) for WATeR. Alice's plays have been seen at numerous Theatres around the country and in europe, including Victory Gardens, Steppenwolf Theatre, Theatre 503 (London), Route 66, Salomee Speelt, Milwaukee Rep, Milwaukee Chamber Theatre, the Irish Theatre Company (Brussels), Famous Door Theatre, Stage Left Theatre, the New Plays Festival, and Chicago Dramatists. Currently, she is developing her play NINTH MAN OUT under commission at the Goodman Theatre. Her 2012 theatrical credits include two critically acclaimed world premieres in Chicago; Alice's translation and adaptation of LA MUSICA by Marguerite Duras and Route 66's collaborative musical NeXT STOP. PLAZA HOTeL BALLROOM received staged readings at A.R.T. (NYC), the Hangar Theatre, Chicago Dramatists, and Pine Box Theatre, and it is the Milwaukee Chamber Theatre's 2013 Montgomery Davis Play Selection. BeST OF ALL POSSIBLe WORLDS received staged readings at the Milwaukee Rep's Stackner Cabaret (with original music by Josh Schmidt) and Route 66. the DeSTRUCTION OF CURVeS has received multiple productions and performances. FOUL was performed at Theatre 503 (London). Alice has recently written two novels, the Geometry of Chance and Jimmy Salvador. Alice grew up in rural Oregon and is a graduate of the University of Oregon where she was a middle distance runner and hurdler on the women's championship track team. She is also a graduate of the Harvard Law School. She was the first American to receive a fellowship to the european Court of Human Rights at the Council of europe in Strasbourg and lived for a number of years in France, Brussels and Prague, where she helped effectuate Vaclav Havel's transformation of the Czech Republic. She teaches playwriting at Chicago Dramatists and has been a guest artist/lecturer at Lawrence University, the Newberry Library (Chicago) and the University of Wisconsin (Milwaukee). She is a member of the Dramatists Guild.
