Ernst Barlach was born on 2nd January 1870. His father was a country doctor who died when Ernst was fourteen. In 1888 he entered the Hamburg School of Arts and Crafts. He studied design and sculpture in Dresden and Paris. From 1898 to 1902 he worked for "Jurgen" magazine. He designed ceramics for the Muntz factory. In 1906 he travelled in Russia with his brother and fathered a child. He started drawing Russian peasant women. By 1907 he and his son were back in Germany and Barlach was providing illustrations for a satirical magazine. He at first enthusiastically supported the First World War. Not able to join up he went to work in an orphanage. After the War he became renowned as an expressionist sculptor. With the rise of the Nazis his work was condemned as "degenerate". He died on October 24th 1938
