Gottfried Benn was born on May 2nd 1886 in Mansfeld, Prussia. His father was a Lutheran priest - he was very strict and Benn hated him. He idolised his Swiss born mother. He would entertain his brothers and sisters with tales he had made up. When he was 26 his mother died and he wrote the poem "Morgue". He was a medical officer during World War One and wrote semi-autobiographical sketches. After the War he worked at a Berlin hospital and started a private practice in a poor Berlin district. He married Edith Brosin and published a second volume of poems. Edith died in 1921. With the rise of the Nazis his poetry was banned - even though some of it supported their cause. He was banned because his publisher was Jewish. In 1935 he joined the Medical Corps and served with them throughout the War. He had remarried and his second wife died in 1945. He secretly published a volume of poems. Benn remarried and after the War continued writing and he now could be published. He died on July 7th 1956.
