Matthew Burnett is a writer and actor, originally from Los Angeles, California. theophilus North, his first full-length play, received its world premiere as a co-production of Arena Stage (Washington, DC) and GEva Theater Center (Rochester, NY), and has since been produced by many other regional U.S. Theaters. theophilus North received a 2004 Helen Hayes award nomination as Outstanding New Play or Musical, in addition to being selected for the FST-Burdick Festival of New Plays in Sarasota, FloridA. theophilus North is published by Samuel French, Inc. as an actor Burnett has performed at Long Wharf Theater, Yale Repertory, and Off-Broadway at Theatre Off Park and the Samuel Beckett Theater. a member of equity, SaG, and an active Member of the Dramatists Guild, Burnett is the recipient of the Natalie Wood award in acting, received his degree in Theatre, Film and Television from UCLa, and studied with the British American Drama academy at Oxford.

Theophilus North
Set in the tony resort town of Newport, RI, during the height of the Jazz Age in summer, 1926, Theophilus North follows the exploits of the title character as he searches for adventure and his place in the world. Quitting his teaching position in New Jersey, and stranded in Newport after his jalopy breaks down, thirty-year-old Theophilus takes odd jobs (tennis instructor, French tutor, private reader. . .) in houses of the wealthy, infiltrating himself into the lives and troubles of Newport's residents, both upstairs and downstairs. But the greatest adventure in store is not at all what he has imagined. . .
