Aquarium, The

Stewart Conn
Shows in a naturalistic setting, but with poetic resonances, a father son tension in an imprisoning, middle class social setting. "In Stewart Conn's play The aquarium a woman asks, 'What's the use of loving someone if you don't show it?' This is the key to the bitter conflict between father and son that Conn so vividly presents. Their hostility does not stem from a lack of affection, but from their inability to express goodwill towards each other. Their relationship steeped in rancour . . . neither is prepared to understand the other, or to make the gesture that would bring them closer together."
- allen Wright, The Scotsman

I Didn't Always Live Here

Stewart Conn
Not as if I always lived here, mind you. . .I started off in Govan. Never dreamt in those days Id end up this side of the river. Real step up in the world that was&Im grateful for it. Despite everything, Im grateful for it' Glasgow, the 1970s. Martha and Amie are old neighbours, trapped in their decaying tenement and cut off from family and friends. With the present closing in and the future uncertain, Martha and Amies real companions are the past and their memories of ordinary lives peopled by extraordinary characters and their struggles and triumphs. I Didnt Always Live Here is a compassionate and heart-rending journey into the forgotten lives of the dispossessed and elderly, as well as an uplifting journey into the human spirits capacity to cope with social exclusion and financial hardship. One of multi-award-winning playwright and poet Stewart Conns earliest works.

Play Donkey

Stewart Conn
Focuses on a Scots mercenary under trial in an African state, and on his uncomprehending family and girl, at home; mixing black comedy with social comment and bemoaning with corrosion and loss of human life. "Play Donkey centres on a young Scottish mercenary awaiting an 'exemplary' trial in 'some emergent African state'. Like a child's game of cat's cradle, it links his destiny with some of those most closely affected by it - his bewildered parents, two girls, the clever London lawyer who flies out to plead his cause, knowing it is already as good as lost. Conn's strength is that he refuses to take sides . . . Laughter is written into the play, and deftly so. It is laughter only to stop you weeping."

www.doollee.com comprises a comprehensive online searchable database for plays written in English since the production of Look back In Anger in 1956. Each play listing contains a playwright biography, synopsis, cast size, creative and production team for the premiere production, date and location of the first performance and much more.doollee.com not only defines the World's theatrical repertoire for the first time but also aims to revitalise that repertoire by reintroducing many lost scripts and providing a gateway for locating and clearing rights for a very large number existing scripts. We are delighted to receive information from users where our own research has been unable to locate details on the holder of a play's rights.doollee.com contains a comprehensive listing for each new play written in English produced by professional theatre companies, venues, festivals, commercial producers and once-off-producers from 1956 to the present. It includes adaptations, translations and new versions. The database also includes those plays produced by fringe (unsubsidised) companies and by semi-professional organisations, where the work is deemed to be of particular significance to the repertoire. Thus you will get help with playwright, dramatist, plays, biography, theatres, agent, synopses, cast sizes, production, published, dates, database, research.
