Market, The

Synopsis:
Leeds, the city of a thousand trades and home to a market for 800 years. At night fall THE MARKET begins, a dark and silent world unfolds as Kirkgate Market, one of Leeds' most famous landmarks reveals its hidden nooks and crannies, its secrets, its stories, its past and its future to hungry listeners. This promenade production takes audiences on a very special journey through Europe's largest indoor market where audiences will meet characters from the past and the present such as Michael The Master Butcher, Linda The Button Lady, Dancing Dean The Caribbean Cafe Man, Mrs K The Spice Lady from Mauritius and The Sheriff. Created from the stories of the people who work there, shop there and remember it well this piece of verbatim theatre charts the history of the market in the words of those who live it and love it the most. Over 100 people were interviewed, recorded and listened to during the development of THE MARKET. The production will be performed by a company of professional and community, this is a story that includes small, intimate conversations over a cup of tea to community choruses which fill the grand architecture of the Market with light & sound.
