        Gentle Tim

Gentle Tim

Synopsis:
Inspired by the incredible story of Timothy Treadwell, Gentle Tim explores the nature of the man behind the documentary and what drove him to become one with an Alaskan population of wild bears through a piece of dramatic theatre. Self-obsession or a publicity stunt are reasons that have tried to explain Timothy's eccentricity. Either way, Treadwell was the ultimate entertainer. Charming, chatty and childish he knew how to engage with humans and bears alike but was this ultimately his downfall? Spending 13 consecutive summers in Alaska, devoid of contact with the outside world, apart from his trusty camera, Treadwell's story is one that has engrossed audiences across the world. But what possessed him to do it, and did he want the eyes of the world watching him or the bears that he so boldly championed? Was he so determined to prove these wild animals could be domesticated by one who could talk to them? Or was he purely doing this to advance his own internal agenda? Joseph Cullen's new work explores these questions and reimagines some of the conversations that Treadwell had before his ultimate, grizzly end. Opening the Waterloo Vaults Festival in 2016, Cullen's interpretation of this true story incorporates beautiful choreographed physical sequences alongside an original score to fully bring the Alaskan wilderness to the London metropolis this winter.
