Vanessa was born in the Cuban satellite city of Miami. Her plays have been produced in Edinburgh, Amsterdam, Miami, New York, and Los Angeles, among other cities. Most recently, her play The Cuban Spring, premiered in the Fall of 2014 at New Theatre, Miami, Fl and was nominated for a Carbonell Award for Best New Play. Her newest play Grace, Sponsored by Monteverde will premiere in Los Angeles in 2015, produced by JustA Theater & Production Company. As a journalist and essayist, her pieces have appeared in the LA Times, The Miami Herald, The Washington Post, The Southern Humanities Review, The Art Basel Magazine, The Rumpus, The Huffington Post, and numerous other publications. She is also a Schaeffer Fellow at the University of California Irvine, where she is completing a memoir about American Born Cubans entitled Our Cuban Routes. Her first novel, White Light, will be published in September 2015.

Crocodiles Bite, The

Synopsis:
Four strangers meet in Miami. An American girl from New York meets an Argentine who fled a deep, dark recession; a Cuban balsero picks up a Salvadorian refugee who cannot escape his past  and their lives are changed forever. Their histories interlace until the knot they make threatens to choke them instead of hold them together. In a city where Buenos Aires, Manhattan, El Salvador, and La Habana collide, The Crocodiles Bite opens its mouth to reveal that the heart of a melting pot is a dangerous place.

The Samuel French staff would like to congratulate the 30 playwrights selected to participate in the 40th Annual Off Off Broadway Short Play Festival! Chosen from nearly fifteen-hundred submissions (a record breaking number) both in the U.S. and abroad, these 30 plays will be presented in New York from August 3  9, 2015. Out of these plays, six winners will be selected by the Samuel French, Inc. editorial staff to receive publication and licensing contracts.
