Novelist, playwright and philosopher. Witold Gombrowicz was described as a Catholic born anti-cleric and anti-establishment figure. He was in Argentina attending a chess tournament when the Germans invaded Poland and remained there in exile. His works were banned in Poland both by the Nazis and later the Communists. His plays did not get performed there until the mid 1970s. He was openly bisexual.
