Bob Laine is a poet, playwright and actor. A graduate or Eastern Michigan University's Masters' program in Speech and Theater Arts, Bob Laine began writing in college. As a competitor and then coach for EMU's national winning forensics program, his poetry placed second in the nation in 1988 and 1989. He moved to Chicago in the early 1990's to teach at Roosevelt University, and began performing his own work in the newly developing poetry slam scene. His success led to a spot on Chicago's National Poetry Slam team. He soon began writing and performing for the stage working with such groups as the Warm Body Theater company, the Spin Half Performance Conflux, and the Other Half theater company. His work earned praise from the Chicago Tribune and the Chicago Reader who called his early pieces "intelligently written", "truly witty" and filled with "eloquent fatalism." Bob Laine moved to New York in late 1990's where he got involved with the New York Neo-Futurists working as a greeter and technician for the group at the Toda Con Nada theater on the Lower East Side. Catching the attention of Aaron Beall, the theater's owner and creative director, he combined several of his short works to form the play What's That Buzz? which opened in 1999 directed by Neo-Futurist William Coelius. The play got the attention of another playwright, Kirk Wood Bromley, who cast him in his original verse play Life's Losses Loved. A short time later, Bob Laine became a member of the Kirk Wood Bromley's award winning Inverse Theater Company and for the next decade performed in over twenty of the company's original verse productions. During that time he took advantage of the company's monthly Verse Circus to workshop his second play, Cocaine Faggot, which was produced in 2003 as part of Here theater's PNBC solo performer's showcase. In addition to acting with Inverse, Bob Laine has performed with many Indy Theater company's in New York including DM Theatrics, Gemini Collision Works, and Tom and Tux productions to name a few. He has also acted in several short films including Dot Down, How People Do and Clown Town. Bob Laine continues to write and act in New York's thriving Indy theater scene and his name can be found as a cast member of many of the plays included on the Indie Theater Now Website.
