Nick Mwaluko was born in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania but raised mostly in neighboring Kenya as well as other countries within the east, central African region. Nick's work as a journalist with Reuters News Agency East Africa became the basis for early dramatic plays, most of which were set in Africa or featured the African immigrant experience. After promotions from the news desk to feature writing--two of Nick's feature stories on street children and female African politicians were published in the Washington Times--Nick worked for Reuters New York, then received scholarships and fellowships for Columbia University where Nick studied Writing and French, graduating Magnum Cum Laude. Columbia University's Dramatic-Writing program awarded Nick a gradute degree in 2009. From 2008-2009, Nick was an inaugural member of the Public Theater's Emerging Writers' Group. In 2010, Nick was a member of TerraNova's Collective. Waafrika, which won several awards including Best Director, was recently shortlisted by London's National Theater's Africa Playwriting Contest. S/He won best play, best lead actress and best writer by the Fresh Fruit Festival. Nick has recently been commissioned by UNCut Voices for a play.
