Carol vs. Christmas

Synopsis:
A struggling theatre company is rehearsing a Christmas show. Carol, the hard-driving real estate agent who owns the building, interrupts, demanding rent. Later, in the empty theatre, deceased business partner Marlene appears to Carol, foretelling that three spirits will appear. Throughout first two, a sage child who speaks in Victorian slang and a gregarious game show host who forces Carol to play along, Carol still remains unmoved. It isn't until she is visited by the Ghost of Christmas Future that Carol is rocked to her core, stunned when the only people who come to the morgue to sign paperwork are a few members of the small theatre company she kicked out of her building. Bittersweet comfort comes to Carol when Future is revealed as the deceased spirit of her own father. She wakes up, back in the theatre where some of the young cast members offer her Monopoly money to pay back the rent. Carol lovingly accepts the payment and joins them in a final Christmas song.

Notes:
Cast size flexible from 16 to 33+ including some speaking roles for children. Script 48 pages, approx. 80 minutes run time. Incorporates several Christmas carols (PD.) This is a reimagining of Dickens' "A Christmas Carol."

Just So, Mr. Kipling

Synopsis:
Celebrated author Rudyard Kipling is shocked after receiving news that his only son John is missing in action in WW I. Kipling bottles his grief, throwing his focus on a new book. Suddenly he's interrupted by a mysterious little girl named Priyam. Charmed by her innocence, he shares his famous story "The Jungle Book" with her. As the tale of Mowgli springs to life, Kipling's own memories of how John became a soldier start to intertwine. As truth blends into fiction, Rudyard's memories shift to nightmares. He finally purges a painful secret, and Priyam reveals the true reason for her visit. Many of John Kipling's lines, especially the monologues, are pulled directly from his own letters. Many direct quotes from Rudyard himself are also incorporated throughout the play. This beautiful ensemble drama will entertain all audiences and educate and challenge any theatrical artist. Originally produced by Acting for Young People at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. (Optional song, "The Letter," available.)

Notes:
Flexible cast size from 14 - 26 speaking roles, extras.
