Living with History: Camus, Sartre, De Beauvoir

Synopsis:
This new play by Howard Pflanzer is an epic work which Dramatizes the politics and personal lives of three iconic cultural figures and intertwines their worlds with the world of ordinary people. the play, which is set both during World War II and in the shadow of nuclear Armageddon, offers a penetrating look at the existential conflict between collaboration and resistance. One central theme is how a change in political context - the French Resistance - affected the three protagonists, who became unified in purpose, and how they they re-evaluated their political and personal positions in the post-war world, where the sides were not as clear as during the war. the piece includes excerpts from plays and other works by the three title characters: brief selections from Sartre's the Flies, No Exit, and Dirty Hands; from Camus's Caligula and his various essays, as well as from the memoirs the Prime of Life and Force of Circumstance by De Beauvoir. An excerpt from Picasso's play Desire Caught by the Tail is also included.

On the Bridge

Synopsis:
On the Border is a dream play that explores German-Jewish cultural critic Walter Benjamin's final night on earth. the time is 1940, the place a seedy hotel in Port Bou on the Spanish-French border. Benjamin has traveled here in a desperate bid to escape the Nazis, only to be denied passage across. Sick, alone, and teetering on the border between life and death in a dream-like state, Benjamin imagines final visits by the people who influenced his life and work, including Dramatist Bertolt Brecht, author Franz Kafka, thinker Hannah Arendt and Death himself. Intermingled with these apparition-like visitors are vivid memories of German anti-Nazi cabaret jokes and songs. As memories and dreams collide, Benjamin's only means of escape becomes tragically clear
