Chosen, The

Chosen, The
The play revolves around Freya Star, a teenage girl who is struggling to find her place in the cut and thrust of The Grove School. She is convinced she is marked in some way, for something special, but those around her doubt her stories and challenge her sense of self. The play is set in a highly imaginative fictional world that addresses the broader concerns, fears and delights of the teenage years in a highly stylized form. Yet, we understand these girls and recognize their motivations and ambitions we feel for them. The characters are all sympathetic and recognizable the hero is deeply flawed as the villain is vulnerable. The Chosen also ponders who we are in the grand sweep of the universe the girls are seeking to understand their place in the cosmos - what it means to be chosen, or not, and our desire to feel special. Freya leads us to see beyond the banality of our everyday lives, to see the Earth as but a very small stage in an expansive cosmic arena. Yet, the play does ultimately affirm that our little lives here on Earth are valuable and precious and that we have the capacity to constantly evolve within them. Freya discovers she doesn't really need saving . . . but this is not Disney. This is contemporary theatre open and ambiguous. The assumption that we have some privileged position in the universe is challenged by this play but no answers are given, no certainties provided. Freya's questions and fears are fundamentally unresolved

Colder

Colder
At the age of seven David was taken to Disneyland. He went missing for seven hours and nobody knew what happened to him Now at the age of thirty-three he goes missing again. Are the two events related? Every year approximately thirty thousand people are reported missing in Australia; that's one every 18 minutes. At least 15% of those people are never located. "Colder" explores how we respond to the sudden absence of a loved one. Inspired by the unexplained disappearance of Sydney man Simon Knight in 2005

Lake Disappointment
Kane is one of the worlds biggest movie stars. His body double has been there from the start, sharing more than just looks with his famous counterpart. The body double and Kane are to work on Lake Disappointmentan independent arts film that might see them win prestigious awards and fame.

written by Lachlan Philpott and Luke Mullins. This one-person play of mirrors and mannerisms explores the strange world of the body double. M Rock

M Rock
M.Rock is a magical new play, based on a true story, about the enduring joys of music, dancing and self-discovery. In his distinctive language, Philpott charts the fortunes of 18-year-old Tracy and her grandmother Mabel. Tracy has just finished school, she's bought a round-the-world ticket and is flying way to soak up experience. By contrast, Mabel is stable. She plays piano for The Players, knits for the African appeal and looks after Hilda's cat. When Tracy misses her plane home, Mabel sets off on a quest to find her granddaughter. But what she finds is her inner DJ.

Michael Swordfish

Michael Swordfish
'You read about those kids who know they don't belong. They are in some kind of prison until they turn 18, stuck in the backseat of the car between two kids who do belong.' What would happen if someone you knew disappeared? How would you react? How would your school react? An assembly called, a footy game postponed, a class interrupted. But who is Michael Swordfish? And who knows where he's gone? For two years award-winning playwright Lachlan Philpott collaborated with students from Newington College, Sydney, to bring their voices and worlds to life. Michael Swordfish is the exciting product of this collaboration: a play that traverses the tumultuous landscape of the teenage experience with a sober truth and darkly comic voice.
