Journeyman

Synopsis:
In the character of ageing boxer Tommy Riley, Irish writer Frank Shouldice has created a journeyman figure imbued with a sense of nobility and tragedy way beyond his hireling status. These hired hands are wrapped an bandages and tied into gloves, after all, and whether in the ring or on the stage (a long-rubning transition, going back to the likes of Clifford Odets in the 1930s) there is an intrinsic sense of the dramatic about the pugilistic which is more to with the jab and the feint, the dancing and the showmanship, than the actual contact itself.
