Original Playwright - Sophocles. 10 performances directed by Barbara Smith

Antigone

Forbidden by her uncle, the tyrant Kreon, to bury her brother Polyneikes because he betrayed and attacked his own city, Antigone defies the edict, finds her brother's corpse, buries it, and carries out the required funeral rites. Guards on watch catch her in the act and bring her to Kreon, who immediately sentences Antigone to be incarcerated in a sealed underground chamber. Haimon, Antigone's betrothed, who happens to be Kreon's son, confronts his father, defends Antigone, but fails to persuade his father to spare her. In a burst of anger Haimon denounces his father and runs off to rescue Antigone. The direct confrontation between political and personal loyalties, which the characters eloquently debate, results not only in the deaths of Antigone, Haimon, and Kreon's wife, but in the moral and political destruction of Kreon. The play is particularly valued for providing one of dramatic literature's most heroic female roles, for the bravura poetry of its choral odes, and for the momentum of its intense, rapid-fire dialogue. Bagg's translation hews closely to the Greek so that Sophocles' own dramatization of a far-from-straightforward tragic clash of motives and principles may be experienced and Antigone's often over-ridden complexities preserved.

Antigone

Oedipus, the former ruler of Thebes, has died. Now, when his young daughter Antigone defies her uncle, Kreon, the new ruler, because he has prohibited the burial of her dead brother, she and he enact a primal conflict between young and old, woman and man, individual and ruler, family and state, courageous and self-sacrificing reverence for the gods of the earth and perhaps self-serving allegiance to the gods of the sky.

Synopsis:

The latest addition to SITI Company's repertoire, Antigone is a provoking tale of family and loyalty, patriotism and war, and the powers of the state. 'This powerful theatrical and emotionally charged experience is shockingly relevant to our present cultural and historic moment', says Artistic Director Anne Bogart. Adapted by Dublin-based Jocelyn ClarkeSITI's long-time collaboratorthe play tells the story of Antigone, the cursed daughter of Oedipus and Jocasta, who defies the King of Thebes for the right to bury her own brother. One of humankind's most enduring and influential stories, it explores conflicts between individual and state and the choices one has to make to either follow one's own beliefs or obey the law. Antigone was first presented as a work-in-progress at The J. Paul Getty Museum's Getty Villa (CA) in May 2009, as part of their Theater Lab series.

Synopsis:

The show follows closely Sophocles' play, but adds a number of new scenes to expand the story, and bring into focus the other characters surrounding the main protagonists: Antigone and her uncle King Creon. Antigone is a tale of family struggles set against the background of a repressive government. The story relates how Antigone, Oedipus' daughter, opposes the might of state and family. She knows that her crime will be discovered and that the penalty will be death, but, for her, principles are more important than personal safety and happiness.

Antigone

a city devastated by war. a family, the House of Oedipus, doomed by incest, guilt, grief and greed. Two brothers slay each other: one loyal subject, the other enemy and traitor, one to be given a hero's burial, the other to be left unburied and exposed to the vultures. Creon, the new king and his young niece, antigone, both wilful and passionate, are determined to be faithful to their individual causes - duty to the State for one, duty to love and morality for the other. In this visual and physical performance of Sophocles' antigone an eternal conflict transcends all boundaries in a tragedy that still resonates in contemporary culture and politics.

Antigone

A muscular version of Sophocles' timeless masterpiece, offering a profound reflection on the nature of power, democracy and human rights. The war has ended, but with peace comes conflict. Antigone's brother Polyneices lies on the battlefield where he fell, his burial outlawed by Creon, the new king of Thebes. Should Antigone obey Creon, or must she follow her conscience and lay her beloved brother to rest?

Directed by Athol Fugard. . .But it is McDonald's text that is the star of the evening, lending the play plenty of punch without depending too heavily on anachronistic language. The translator's focus on the central ideas has an emotional clarity that is entirely seductive. There may be, Sophocles and McDonald whisper to anyone who will listen, a tremendous moral power in compromise. Luke Clancy, London Times (July 21, 1999)

Original Playwright - Sophocles. Televised 1986 by BBC

Antigone

The gods never move faster than when punishing men with the consequences of their own actions. Desperate to gain control over a city ravaged by civil war, Creon refuses to bury the body of Antigone's rebellious brother. Outraged, she defies his edict. Creon condemns the young woman, his niece, to be buried alive. The people daren't object but the prophet Teiresias warns that this tyranny will anger the gods: the rotting corpse is polluting the city. Creon hesitates and his fate is sealed. Sophocles' great tragic play dramatises the clash between the family and the city and, with high poetry and deep tragedy, presents an irreconcilable but equally-balanced conflict. Sophoclean heroine Antigone has become a cultural archetype, the symbol of personal integrity and an icon of political freedom, whilst her co-protagonist Creon can be interpreted as either a civic saviour or a ruthless tyrant.

As dawn breaks over Thebes, Kreon and his Western allies decide enough is enough. One of the brothers will be buried with full honours. The other will be left to rot in the sand. Antigone

Two brothers, Polyneikes and Eteocles, fight for the crown of Thebes. They kill each other. The rule is strict and clear: whoever dares to bury Polyneikes will be punished with death. Antigone cannot accept the laws that leave one of her brothers unburied and humiliated. State against Ideals, a young woman against a monarch, the whole town, us, inside the arena. How do you get a diamond out of a stone? 'I was born to love, not hate', states Antigone. And there is always a cost for it.

Original Playwright - Sophocles. Adaptation of classic tragedy, Antigone

Burial At Thebes, The

Commissioned to mark the centenary of the abbey Theatre in Dublin in 2004, The Burial at Thebes is Seamus Heaney's new verse translation of Sophocles' great tragedy, antigone - whose eponymous heroine is one of the most sharply individualized and compelling figures in Western drama. Faithful to the 'local row' and to the fierce specificity of the play's time and place, The Burial at Thebes honours the separate and irreconcilable claims of its opposed voices, as they enact the ancient but perennial conflict between family and state in a time of crisis, pitching the morality of private allegiance against that of public service. above all, The Burial at Thebes honours the sovereign urgency and grandeur of the antigone, in which language speaks truth to power, then and now.

Original Playwright - Sophocles. Translated by Marianne McDonald and Michael Walton

Synopsis:

Vox Hellenic, the Sledgehammer-GrassRoots Greeks collaboration, concluded with a bang -- and and Electra shock. One of the best pairings of the series was Marianne McDonald's translation of Sophocles' "Electra," coupled with Luis Alfaro's Spanglish adaptation, "Electricidad." McDonald's translation was written in collaboration with J. Michael Walton , and it had her usual clarity coupled with more poetic lyricism. Lovely reading, especially strong in the performances of Anne Tran in the title role, a weepy, wailing affair, extremely well carried off; and Brennan Taylor as her peripatetic brother, Orestes; Lisel Gorel as her sister Chrysothemis. Alfaro spins it all on its head and turns it southward& with a charming and delightful bilingual adaptation that was neck-snapping in its pitch-perfect timing (especially given that the cast had only one rehearsal!). They were all nimble and convincing in this intriguing story of a Barrio family stuck in The Life. The father was brutally murdered, gangland style, arranged by his power-hungry wife, who wants to take over the family 'business.' April Doctolero was terrific as Electricidad, with strong performances put in by Rene Pena as her nasty, chain-smoking mother, Clemencia; Kim Miller compelling as born-again sister, Cristina; Juan Manzo potent as the Vegas-escapee, Orestes; and Raul Moncada unwavering as the familia's steadfast friend, Nino. Wonderful way to spend an afternoon.

Synopsis:

An empire crumbling. Betrayal. Murder. Vengeance. Electra is a darkly psychological study of a woman s obsession with her murdered father and her quest for retribution. When her brother unexpectedly returns from exile, the stage is set for Electra s endgame. But vengeance has its price. For how can there be closure if, to avenge your father s death, you must first kill your mother? An adaptation of the explosive tale of lust, loyalty and betrayal.

Synopsis:

Sophocles's Electra, written around 409 B.C., is based on the legend of the House of Atreus, a story which contemporary Greek audiences would have known from childhood. The major themes of this story concern retribution for crimes committed within the family of Atreus, who was Electra's grandfather. Electra's duty in the play is to avenge her father's murder, but this involves killing her own mother, another crime that will have consequences down the line. The text is a completely new take on the story.

Wonderful way to spend an afternoon.

a contemporary verse adaptation by Aole T. Miller of Sophocles's classic drama Antigone. This description is from the press release: "I Kreon focuses on Kreon's point of view. How does the leader of a shattered nation, a nation whose Towers have fallen, begin the process of rebuilding and reuniting that nation? How does he best honor the dead? What sacrifice is he willing to make to secure this rebuilt nation? Dealing with the issue of being an American today, I Kreon is set in the post-apocalyptic world of New Thebes and asks the poignant question, 'Can a modern ruler rebuilding a nation destroyed by terrorism be both a benevolent 'father' and an officer of the state?'"

Synopsis:

My version of Oedipus seeks to examine the play and occasionally peer beneath the tendency to strut and pose, to high-blown rhetoric and an air of self-importance somehow unavoidable in versions of Greek tragedy. I also sought to relate some events to images of today since the greatness of Greek tragedy is that its themes deal with the power of natural forces and the cycle of life and death. So its shadow lies across the years and its arguments are mankind's into perpetuity. I see Oedipus as a modern man, self-made, tough and bold, who uses language as a weapon to cut through verbal adiposity and obliqueness. He is more of a strutter whose stance relates to him having always to battle against some force determined to defeat him. Whether at the crossroads where he destroyed his father and the officious guards, or the Sphinx, he seeks to combat fate and leaves his adopted home so as not to fall into its predicted trap. So when yet another problem in Thebes raises its many heads Oedipus is already fight trained.

A plague grips the city of Thebes. Desperate to save his people, King Oedipus sends a messenger to the oracle at Delphi and discovers that the city's salvation lies in finding and punishing the murderer of the former king, Laius, who was brutally slain by a stranger at a crossroads years ago. When Oedipus orders a manhunt, he unknowingly sets the wheels of his own destruction in motion. This lean, contemporary version brings a new, poignant power to this primal work that is the cornerstone of Western drama.

Oedipus

Oedipus has been made king of Thebes as gratitude for ridding its people of the pestilence of the riddling Sphinx, as well as the hand of Queen Jokasta, bride to the late King Laius. When another pestilence descends upon the city, Jokasta's brother Kreon seeks out the oracle for help, who tells Kreon that when old King Laius' murderer is found, the city will again be well. Oedipus sends for the prophet Teiresias, who, under duress, names Oedipus as the killer. Jokasta, thinking to defend her husband, explains that seers aren't always reliable. She cites an old prophecy in which her son would kill his father and go on to have children with his mother, pointing out that she averted this by abandoning her baby boy after his birth. Besides which, Laius was killed by robbers on his way to Delphi. It is then that Oedipus remembers that, when fleeing his home of Corinth to escape a similar prophecy, he robbed and killed a man matching Laius' description. . .

Synopsis:

Written in 402 B.C., some 20 years after the far more successful and widely performed Oedipus Rex, Oedipus at Colonus is set in a village outside Athens. By now, Oedipus is old and blind. Exiled by his sons and Creon, he has come to Colonus with his daughter Antigone after years of wandering. He recalls Apollo's prophecy that he would find rest in a grove such as he finds there and refuses to obey an order to leave. When the Chorus, made up of the old men of Colonus, discovers his identity, they are horrified despite his insistence on his innocence. Oedipus's other daughter, Ismene, arrives with word that his sons are warring over his throne. Another prophecy has promised that the city that shelters Oedipus's body will be the victor. Ismene warns Oedipus: Creon will come to take hun home. When Theseus, the king, arrives, Oedipus requests protection and explains the prophecy of victory. He is made a citizen. When Creon attempts to persuade Oedipus to return, he refuses and sees his daughters seized. Theseus arrests Creon and rescues the daughters. While searching for them he has encountered Oedipus' son Polynices, whom Oedipus only reluctantly agrees to see. Polynices begs for support, only to be told that he is destined to be killed by his brother. Oedipus bids farewell to his daughters and the gods summon him as his daughters voice their lamentations.

Well, she's certainly doing her part, making her way through the whole tragic canon, with translations that are clear, colloquial and comprehensible&..there are several memorable lines that go right to the heart and soul of our current cultural climate; 'so much for fame, when it trickles away and comes to nothing.' 'I was a victim, not a criminal.' 'Trouble for the sake of a parent should be no trouble at all.' A country's power withers, just like a man's body." Synopsis:

Following Sophocles Oedipus the King and Oedipus Tyrannos, in this third and final play of the series we encounter Oedipus as an old, blind and penniless man, who, cared for by his daughter Antigone only, arrives at an olive grove outside Colonus after restlessly travelling the country. In this holy place, he has to face the false pretence of Creon and his son Polynices, who try to persuade him into coming back to Thebes for their own selfish reasons. He is forced to tell his tantalizing story all over again until finally, with the help of King Theseus, he is able to at last make his peace with this world. A unique chance to experience the gripping tragedy in a mixture of English, modern Greek and its original ancient Greek language! There will be subtitles for the Greek parts of the play

Oedipus at Kolonos

Old, blind, depleted in body by years of wandering through Attika in the care of his daughter Antigone, Oedipus arrives at the sacred grove of the Eumenides in Kolonos, a village on the outskirts of Athens. Apollo had promised years ago, during the same session at Delphi in which the god warned the young Oedipus he was destined to commit patricide and incest, that he'd receive a kind death in this grove. Forced from experience to realize that Apollo's oracles should be trusted, Oedipus now presents himself at the appointed place, ready to die. Defiantly stationing himself just outside this grove at Kolonos, Oedipus in succession receives: a delegation of Old Men from Kolonos; his daughter Ismene, who arrives from Thebes on horseback bringing shocking prophecies; King Theseus of Athens, who offers him refuge; Kreon, who tries to kidnap him back to Thebes; and finally his disowned son Polyneikes. At last thunder and lightning announce that it's time to keep his rendezvous with a wondrous death, in the course of which the gods of the underworld symbolically re-enact, and absolve him of, the horror of the very crimes they drove him to commit.

Oedipus The King

Apollo contrives for Oedipus to rise from an unwanted, abandoned newborn to become ruler of Thebes, then to be destroyed, self-blinded, and ultimately exiled. Faced with the terrifying prediction that he'll kill his father and marry his mother, Oedipus flees Korinth and the parents he believes to be his own. In a fit of road-rage he kills several men and arrives in Thebes just in time to put down the Sphinx, who was systematically disposing of those too dull-witted to solve her riddle. Oedipus is rewarded by grateful Thebans with their vacant throne and the newly widowed queen; she bears him children whom he will discover are his own half-brothers and -sisters. Nothing in Oedipus' world, and by implication our own, is in reality what it seems. Sophokles peppers the dialogue with double entrendres and puns that point to what the king doesn't know about his predicament-but readers and audiences do know. Ingenuity and swiftness of plot, as well as razor-sharp poetry, keep contemporary audiences riveted by the damage Oedipus suffers, and by the human eloquence with which he articulates the cosmic injustice the gods inflict on him.

Synopsis:

based on a simple metanarrative that has the story of Oedipus told by a group of four contemporary student types on a camping holiday in some remote part of the country. Gathered round a bonfire, necking whisky, sucking on a hubble-bubble pipe full of dope, and determined to frighten one another out of their wits, they gradually converge on the story of the Theban king who, ignorant of his own birth, comes to power by killing his father and marrying his mother, only to see the gods punish his city with horrific plague and pestilence, until his unwitring crimes come to light, and are purged in a nightmare of shame, horror, bereavement and selfmutilation.

Synopsis:

The play is about revealing the potential horrors beneath the surface-beauty of life, as of art, illusion and reality. It is also a meta-tragedy, a tragedy about tragedy. The proportional relationships in tragedy, however, differ between the ancient and the modern writer. Whereas Shakespeare and Pirandello use the awareness of illusion to explore theatricality, Sophocles uses theatricality to explore the moral, religious and metaphysical questions, raised by the suffering of Oedipus

Synopsis:

Greece suffers in turmoil. War has erupted, paranoia is rising, and sanity is thinning. There's death everywhere and the foul smell of disease is uneasy to shake. Action demands consequence and there are harsh lessons to endure, redemption to be earned, and clarity to be evoked. Yet still, despite the greatest of efforts, there are no cure for the sicknesses. In These Seven Sicknesses, Sophocles' seven surviving plays - Oedipus, In Trachis, Philoktetes, In Colonus, Ajax, Elektra & Antigone - combine to create a stunning portrait of the human condition, where the intermingling of chance & fate yields disquieting results. A witty & relevant interpretation of the classics, These Seven Sicknesses is an epic examination of the past & a window on the present. The Flea is partnering with neighborhood favorite, Macao Trading Co., to provide dinner for the show each night. The main entree will be vegan and gluten-free, and will be included in the cost of the ticket. The acting company will serve audience members at this unique event.

Original Playwright - Sophocles. 1Publication forthcoming in Sophocles Outcasts: Aias & Philoktetes, Elektra & Women of Trakkhis, from University of Massachusetts Press, Amherst.

Synopsis:

Deianeira, the home-bound and devoted wife of Herakles, opens the play by describing her unhappy marriage: her husband for the past twelve years has a custom of returning from his heroic chores only long enough to get her pregnant; then he's off again, encountering compliant women along with formidable monsters. Desperate after fifteen months without any news of him, Deianeira sends her son Hyllus to find his father. Just after Hyllus sets out, a messenger from Herakles turns up escorting a contingent of female slaves, including the strikingly attractive but totally mute Iole. Eventually Deianeira learns that Iole is actually Herakles' concubine, a princess whom he loves. Unwilling to be displaced, Deianeira soaks a robe in a love potion and sends it back to Herakles via the messenger. Unfortunately the centaur who gave Deianeira the potion had another agenda than making Deianeira irresistible to her husband. When Herakles makes his entrance, he is in no condition to love anyone, in screaming pain from third-degree acid burns. He demands Hyllus carry out his appalling final wishes: to burn Herakles alive and then marry Iole. In this play Sophokles explores shocking but psychologically astute ways to show good people going wrong.
