Cry of the Reed

Synopsis:
A journalist and her colleague find themselves unexpectedly "detained" by a band of insurgents as bombs rain down on a wartorn landscape. Her captors offer her one telephone call - a chance to reconnect with the mother she hasn't spoken to in 10 years, now living in Turkey and preparing for a festival celebrating the great Sufi poet Rumi. History, religion, and the beauty of whirling dervishes collide in this powerful, ripped-from-the-headlines portrait of a world at war.

Pathetique

Synopsis:
In the fall of 1893, Tchaikovsky is in Petersburg to conduct his 6th Symphony Pathetique, the darkest and most mysterious of his works. Five days after the premiere of the symphony, which, by the composer's own admission, is imbued with a "subjective and secret program," Tchaikovsky is dead. Ten years later the composer's brother Modest and nephew Bobyk continue to endure the effects of the unrelenting gossip, doubts and speculation surrounding the the composer's death and the symphony's unrevealed subject. Through a narrative that weaves between the events of 1893 and 1903, playwright Unel explores the nature of art and the artist's precarious relationship to his audience and his work.

Notes:
Pathetique was developed during A residency At the Huntington theater Company where it received A public reading.

Pera Palas

Synopsis:
Pera Palas' three intertwined stories embrace no less than the destiny of a nation, the liberation of women and the fate of lovers. All are linked to guests at the venerable Pera Palas Hotel in Istanbul. With its action stretching from the last days of the Ottoman Empire in Constantinople in 1918 to the reincarnated Istanbul of the Republic of Turkey in 1994, ''Pera Palas'' pulses with passion and questing intelligence. Taking a long view of history and gazing clear-eyed and unflinchingly at the consequences of political and personal decisions, ''Pera Palas'' is ialight with comic touches. - Lawrence Van Gelder, New York Times - June 1998
