Fred Rohan Vargas is the author of several full lengths, one acts and children's plays that have been produced throughout the country. He holds a MFA in dramatic writing from New York University. Prior to receiving a fellowship for graduate school, Fred began his theatre career by starting a dance theatre company for youths that got his fifty young performers to appear in places like Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall, Pittsburgh's Performing Arts Center and Cami Hall with great jazz artists, Dizzy Gillespie and Horace Silver. After passing his gauntlet as a director to his successor, Fred became a radio announcer for WSTA in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. It wasn't until he put on his first production of his play WHY DE DONKEY SO STUBBORN that he discovered his true love for the theatre world. The islands allowed him to explore more of his Caribbean roots. There, he was able to learn the power of language and what it can do on stage. For several years Fred has worked with professional theaters, directors and actors. He has received grants and awards such as the New York State Council on the Arts Theatre Commissions for his play CRYSTAL, which was later produced in New York by the Latino Experimental Fantastic Theatre's millennium season and the Impact II Developer Grant sponsored by the Board of Education of the City of New York for his children's play THE BIG EYED GORILLA performed at the Henry Street Settlement House. Fred is also a published writer and a promising songwriter. Currently, he is a member of the Queens Theatre in the Park's playwrights group, the Dramatists Guild of America, Stellar Network and the International Songwriters' Association.

Research:    Member of the Dramatists Guild of America (as at 2016)

Tide Beyond the Rift

Synopsis:
A full length one act about two people looking to fill a void in their lives by developing a father- daughter relationship. Niurka, a middle school teacher, finds her niche of contentment with her husband, Bill and their daughter Kelly. Her only emotional drawback is the absence of her parents during her childhood years. Growing up, she spent most of her time in an orphanage. Dismissing the thought of those impressionable years, she one day receives a letter from her long lost father. He asks if he could visit her. Reluctant at first, Niurka agrees to invite him to her beach home. Quite naturally, she becomes cautious and distant. Her father, Sebastian, tries to ease the tension by being humorous and understanding. Gradually, they both begin to bond with each other. However, Sebastian shatters their delicate relationship by confessing to Niurka his true reason for spending the summer with her and her family.
