Pelham Granville Wodehouse was born on 14th October 1881. His father was a judge in Hong Kong and he was brought up in England by aunts and attended boarding schools. Up to the age of fifteen he hardly ever saw his parents. He attended Dulwich College which he enjoyed. He acted in plays there and edited the school magazine. He was unable to go to University because of financial problems of his father's. His father got him a job in a bank but he disliked it. He started writing and in 1902 became a journalist on "the Globe" newspaper. He took over the paper's humorous column. He had contributions in "Punch" and "Vanity Fair" wrote numerous stories for schoolboy magazines and with Bertram Fletcher Robinson wrote some playlets. In 1909 he sold some stories to "Cosmopolitan" and "Collier's Magazine" he was paid far more than he had ever received before. He resigned from "the Globe" and left for New York. He then split his time between the U S and U K. In 1914 he married Ethel Wayman who had a daughter - LeonorA. Because he was being taxed in both countries of residence he moved to France. He seemed unaware of the oncoming War and when the Germans invaded France he was interred. In the internment camps he put on entertainments fro the other internees. He was released just before his 60th birthday - this gave rise to the story that he had collaborated with the enemy - but the Geneva Convention said that people who reached the age of 60 should be released. He went to live in Berlin for a while and then Paris which was still occupied. He drafted humorous broadcasts aimed at Americans. All this was evidence that he was collaborating - he had hoped it would show a stiff upper lip. He was investigated by MI5 who determined that he was naive but not a traitor. After the War he moved permanently to the US and never returned to Britain again. He became a US citizen in 1955. In 1975 he was knighted but was not well enough to travel to London for the investiture. He died after a heart attack on February 14th 1975.Of all the hundreds of books, stories, lyrics and plays that he wrote he will always be remembered for Jeeves and Wooster
