Ulrich Becher was born on January 2nd 1910 in Berlin. He studied law. He began writing and in 1932 had success with the book "Manner Machen Fehler" ("Men Make Mistakes") . However, with the rise of the Nazis his work was condemned as degenerate. He was the youngest writer to have his books publicly burnt. In 1933 he married Dana Roda an Austrian and took out Austrian citizenship. He and his wife tried to flee from the Nazis but Switzerland refused to let them into the country. - Becher's stand against the fascists was deemed to endanger Switzerland's neutral position. Luckily they got to Portugal and then to Brazil. They returned to Europe in 1948. Becher died on April 15th 1990
