Epicene Butcher and Other Stories for Consenting Adults, The

Kamishibai, translated as paper play, originated as children's street theatre in Japan. Storytellers would travel from village to village on bicycle, telling stories using illustrated paper panels. Today there are only about 100 Kamishibai performers left in Japan. Jemma Kahn studied under veteran performer Rokuda Genji with whom she travelled and performed. In The Epicene Butcher, Kahn performs seven eclectic stories that take in divergent themes, such as enlightenment, pornography and the dream life of cats. This cross-cultural oddity has been performed throughout South Africa and abroad garnering numerous awards.
