A civil servant for a number of years in the Old Age Pensions Department, which gave him an opportunity of observing Irish rural life at close quarters. A number of his plays were staged at the Abbey Theatre, Dublin.

Play set in a lighthouse in Clew bay where a man, gone half-crazy with piety, his senile father his aged mother and his three children live. they have been hiding from the world for 21 years. the fact that the eldest daughter has given birth to an imbecile and illegitimate child had driven the family from the mainland to live in the old lighthouse. the child was kept in chains in a large cupboard in the kitchen, fed by its mother and kept well hidden. No one is happy and when the eldest son returns from the US he goes about changing things.
