FALKLAND L CARY

  (1897 - 1989)

Nationality:    Irish
email:    n/a     Website:    n/a

Literary Agent:    n/a

Playwright and screenwriter Falkland Lucius Cary was born in Kildare, Ireland, in 1897 and educated at Aldenham School and Trinity College, Dublin. He trained as a doctor, and established a successful practice as an obstetrician, first in Yorkshire and then in London. He estimated that during his medical career he delivered some 2,000 babies. During his student days he developed a lifelong love of the theatre, and in 1946 he gave up his medical practice to concentrate on writing plays. His theatre career started modestly. Only one of his first seven plays was staged in London. He sometimes wrote alone, or more often in collaboration, most frequently with Philip King. Their two most successful works were farcical comedies, Sailor Beware! (1954) and Big Bad Mouse (1966). In addition to his comedies, Cary wrote stage thrillers, and original works and adaptations for television and cinema. His plays were popular with amateur drama groups, and he made a substantial income in royalties from that quarter. He was a great fan of model railways and loved amateur theatricals. Cary died at the age of 92. He never married.

Train Fever

Synopsis:
First performance was at Hamble, Hants, by the Hamble Players. the Producer was Stuart Jacobs. Not sure of the date but it was sometime in 1963/4/5. the play is set in a stately home, and involves forged fivers, and a train-mad peer. the first act closes with a swarm of bees, and the play closes with a small railway engine entering through the French windows. FLC visited our production and had a chat with me as didn't know how to create some of the sound effects he'd written. FLC produced the play about a month later with another Hampshire amateur group (Fleet players?). John Lawler
