Before the statue is unveiled a message comes through stating that the President has declared war. everyone is enthusiastic - apart from Johnny. they all leave and Johnny unveils his statue - it is a dove. His girlfriend breaks off their engagement when he wont join up. So Johnny goes to the recruiting office but is rejected until he floors a soldier with one punch. Native Son

Native Son
story of Bigger Thomas, a black youth seeking his identity in the white world. He comes to life as a big, lumbering, rather misguided young man hell-bent on slovenly behavior and self-destruction. How he got that way is the premise - that he's the direct result of society's slovenly neglect for his environment and well-being.
