Garret Jon Groenveld is a poet, teacher and playwright based in San Francisco. He has an MFA in Poetry and an Ma in Playwrighting from San Francisco State University and has studied with Edward albee at the University of Houston. He has some 100 short plays and full lengths include: "the absence of Birds", "the Spy", "Missives", "the Voyage of St. Brandaen" and "the Grand Divorce." Involved with PlayGround since it's inception, he's also the company Dramaturg and education Coordinator. His plays have been presented as part of the Bay area Playwrights Festival, and he was selected as the first representative of the Sister City exchange by the Playwrights Foundation. "Missives" received it's world premiere in 2005 at Theatre Rhinoceros in San Francisco.

Absence Of Birds, The

Synopsis:
In a tiny apartment in 1994's Sarajevo, a couple struggles with their morals: is murder still murder in a war? ethnicity and the tenuous moral conundrums of surviving a conflict you do not choose play into choices, good or bad. the second act happens five years later, and five years earlier.

Voyage Of St Brandaen, The

Synopsis:
the tale of a 14th Century mythical Dutch saint who destroyed the Truth and is cast out onto the sea for Seven years to find it again. Told in verse, his adventures lead him to strange encounters, from a miniature man who sails the world on a giant leaf, to a tortured king, to memories of rotten childhood, to Judas Iscariot (half his body frozen, half his body in flames). Stage craft and puppetry, or a simple solo meditation on the search for faith when one has no reason to believe.
