Ron Hutchinson is a winner of the George Devine and John Whiting new writing awards and was the Royal Shakespeare Theatre's writer-in-residence 1980-81. author of the acclaimed West-end hit Rat in the Skull, which was revived in 1995, his latest Theatre work includes an adaptation of Mikhail Bulgakov's Flight (Royal National Theatre, 1998), Burning Issues (Hampstead Theatre, 2000) and Beyond Beauty (Playbox Young People's Theatre, 2000). an emmy award-winning screenwriter, he lives in Los Angeles, where he works in television and feature films.

Synopsis:
Released after fifteen years in prison, trapped in a bureaucratic maze, petty criminal Wilhelm Voigt wanders 1910 Berlin in desperate, hazardous pursuit of identity papers. Luck changes when he picks up an abandoned military uniform in a fancy-dress shop and finds the city ready to obey his every command. At the head of six soldiers, he marches to the Mayor's office, cites corruption and confiscates the treasury with ease. But still what he craves is official recognition that he exists. "I used to think all the trouble in the world was caused by people giving orders. Now I reckon that it's people being so willing to take them." A nation heads blindly towards war as the misfit takes on the state in Ron Hutchinson's savagely funny new version of Carl Zuckmayer's the Captain of Kopenick, first staged in Germany in 1931. Durand's Line

Durand's Line
This play is preceded by a poetic duologue from Siba Shakib which glorifies Jemima Rooper's Malalai, a kind of afghan Joan of arc. Her story melts into a tale of diplomacy British style. Sir Henry Mortimer Durand was British Foreign Minister in India from 1885-94 and judging by Ron Hutchinson's portrait, acted out by a suitably pompous Michael Cochrane, personified all that was bad about his country. With a combination of bullying and bluster, he tries to persuade Paul Bhattacharjee's abdur Rahman, the amir appointed by the Brits, to divide up his kingdom. He gets short shrift and the threat of an alternative alliance for the amir with the Russians. the most telling moment is when the local man draws a parallel with Great (and wasn't it?) Britain, suggesting an enlargement of Wales and division of Scotland as an appropriate equivalent to what is proposed. .

Pygmies In the Ruins

Synopsis:
Belfast, 1991 and 1871. RUC photographer Washburn cracks up, becoming obsessed with an unsolved death from 1871 and linking it with the recent murder that pushed him over the edge.
