BERIT JOHNSON has been working in Indie Theater in NYC since 1996. Starting out primarily as a stage manager and prop builder, she has gradually branched out into production, design, and now, playwriting. She has worked primarily with directors Daniel McKleinfeld, Edward Einhorn, Frank Cwiklik, and especially Ian W. Hill, who she joined as the co-director of his company, Gemini CollisionWorks, in 2001. She and Mr. Hill have been the technical directors of The Brick in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, since 2007, where Gemini CollisionWorks has presented a season of its new and adapted work each year since, and will continue to do so as long as it's allowed. As a writer, her only previous work prior to The Strategist was as co-translator (from the French) with Mr. Hill on the first-ever authorized English version of Eugene Ionesco's play The Viscount. She has also been a close adviser, editorial hand, world-builder, and occasional supplier of funny words or full jokes for the majority of Mr. Hill's scripts, and did some rewriting on Mr. Hill's script for The Wedding of Ian W. Hill & Berit Johnson, their actual wedding ceremony which was presented as a four-performance run at The Brick in 2010. She would probably rather be building props.
