Apocalypse Bear Trilogy

Synopsis:
This is an invitation. New lands are being created. Memory, now and the future are pouring onto the internet. Reality is splintering into shards of mirror and a casual, congenial bear is showing up at people's houses. If you've had a bad day at school, he'll take you back to where it all went wrong. Or he may invite you to the woods - a place of myth, transgression and discovery, where outcasts can start again - but with grave consequences. 'In the first of the trilogy, "the Fag from Zagreb", Jeremy, comes home at twilight to find the house empty except for the Apocalypse Bear preparing his after school snack. In the second, "Back to the Cafeteria", Sonya is trying to make sense of her failed marriage by returning to adolescence and unpicking the high school holy trinity of popularity, cool and beauty. "Into the Woods" brings the two characters together under the benign malevolence of the Apocalypse Bear.'

At Last

Synopsis:
A casual, congenial bear is showing up at people's houses. If you've had a bad day at school, he'll take you back to where it all went wrong. In a manner typical of Lally Katz's work, Apocalypse Bear Trilogy teeters the line of absurdity, yet remains rooted in the mythic structures beneath the surface of domestic and suburban reality.

Atlantis

Atlantis
Lally Katz is on a journey. Shes left Australia behind and shes in the country of her childhood, trying to find a way back to when things were innocent. Her relationships are chaotic, her professional life is a shambles and contemporary America seems riddled with charlatans and shysters. But along the way moments of wisdom bubble up, as if from some lost ancient city beneath the waves off Florida. . .The fabulous Lally Katz once again mines her life both real and imaginative for an epic story lined with romantic dilemmas and unforgettable encounters. A grand adventure through cynical times, but infused with Lallys unwavering optimism.

Black Swan Of Trespass

Black Swan Of Trespass
Based on a true story. A naive performance style has been added to the story of Ern Malley, the hoax poet invention of Harold Stewart and James McAuley. The two hoaxers have been 'reincarnated' as stuffed animals with the power of speech, a handsome red rooster in the case of McAuley, a smug tomcat for Stewart.

Criminology

Synopsis:
1997: Princess Diana. Mother Theresa. Titanic. While disaster made headlines and the world hurtled towards the next millennium, a death almost went unnoticed in a quiet Canberra home. 'Law student Anu Singh held a "send off party" after declaring to her friends she had decided to take her own life. Afterwards, she drugged her boyfriend Joe Cinque's coffee and over the next two days injected him with lethal doses of heroin. What made the crime more shocking was that several of her party guests had known that she'd planned to take someone along for the ride. Incredibly, Singh's eventual sentencing to ten years in prison for manslaughter gave her the time to complete her Masters Degree in Criminology, exploring the causes of female crime. 'In 'Criminology', easy assumptions about guilt and innocence, and the value of life are shaken to the core. It is the chronicle of a death foretold, but not prevented. It is an erotic, arresting, adrenaline-fuelled ride into the dark blood of a killer.' Source: Malthouse theatre website, http://www.malthousetheatre.com.au/

Dolls House, A

Dolls House, A
Nora seems to have it all - a successful husband, adorable children and a beautiful home. But this picture perfect life is actually a complicated trap of secrets and lies. Here is a story of domestic revolution, marriage and motherhood, female empowerment and the journey towards self-liberation. Henrik Ibsen's great psychological thriller was recently named as the world's most performed play. And why wouldn't it be? It's brilliantly plotted, boasts striking characters, and tells a story that's still as charged and as moving as it was when written in 1879.

Golem Story, A

Synopsis:
Under extreme threat, people are capable of anything, monsters appear. On the cobble-stone streets of medieval Prague, chaos reigns. as the men fight their own demons, and each other, children are disappearing. an invisible emperor has decreed a purging of the Ghetto, and a Rabbi works through the dark night to fashion an avenging monster. Our enduring fascination with the myths of vampires, demons and werewolves, has haunted our children and hemorrhaged our literature for millennia. But long before Dr Frankenstein's monster there was the Golem; a superhuman figure fashioned from mud and endowed with terrible strength. Playwright Lally Katz has deftly weaved humour, philosophy and fantasy to create a gothic and romantic rendering of this classic myth. Director Michael Kantor returns to the Merlyn theatre stage to inject mischief, magic and soaring Yiddish melodies into this cautionary tale of monumental proportions. In their hands, this monster becomes even more; a troubling yet seductive mirror to our contemporary selves.

Goodbye Vaudeville Charlie Mudd

Goodbye Vaudeville Charlie Mudd
Step back in time to a place where the great Vaudevillian Halls were filled with dime museums, knife-throwing dancers, comedians and minstrel musicians. It's 1914 and Melbourne's swelling Swanston River threatens to consume all in its wake, but not before one final night on the stage, one last chance to perform! - a play about pain and cruel desire; about the need for laughter, the palaces we build for it, and its human cost.

Melburnalia

Synopsis:
. . . [F]eaturing the CBD, Kew, St Kilda, Ringwood and Footscray. Melburnalia weaves together five specially commissioned new plays by outstanding local writers Kate Holden, Lally Katz, Ross Mueller, Tee O'Neill and Alice Pung. these short works form a single theatrical journey which transits from suburb to suburb and uncovers a city with many faces. each play illuminates the extraordinary within the ordinary: paraphernalia and miscellanea yield up their stories. From the grungy backalleys of St Kilda to the boulevards of Kew; first love in Footscray and betrayal in Ringwood; from the wide lanes of the Maroondah Highway to the narrow arcades of Degraves St; from heroin to homosexuality; library to laneway; sex work to stage work; bohemians to bogans to boat people to an Apocalypse Bear. Melburnalia is a thought- provoking exploration of the diverse localities, peoples and meanings that come together to form 'Melbourne'.' Quarreling Pair, A

Synopsis:
In a compelling study of sister rivalry, the play draws on the desire to feel both safe and free in our most precious relationships. This triptych of miniature plays for adults combines text by American writer Jane Bowles with new pieces by Lally Katz and Cynhia Troup. Smashed

Smashed
Smashed is a tale of 'besties' Hazel and Ruby. On the verge of adulthood, the future is bright & the past is a disco blur. With impossible high heels stalking through black holes, diva hair and a map to anywhere, these girls know how to play dress-up and how to make believe. But in this doll's house universe of memory and fantasy, of unrestrained joy and discordant elegy, the game becomes increasingly desperate when an impending tragedy threatens to blow everything apart.
