Accident Of Circumstance

Synopsis:
John suspects that people are plotting against him. His GP diagnoses him as schizophrenic. John is a highly intelligent man; he analyses his illness and the treatment he's enduring, and knows there's nothing wrong with him. His encounters in hospital with the doctor who seems baffled by his illness become increasingly fraught. His relationship with his wife Ellen disintegrates, and their marriage breaks down. His turbulent and increasingly difficult life ends in his death, and a release from his pain. A Drama based on actual events, and told in 'John and Ellen's own words.

Assipattle And the Stoorworm

Synopsis:
A ferocious sea-monster, the Stoorworm, threatens the kingdom and evil Queen Beitris and Murdo the Sorcerer plot to have Princess Gemdelovely sacrificed to the creature to the dismay of ancient King Magnus. To everybody's amazement, timid farmer's son Assipattle rescues the princess.

Beware the Jabberwock

Beware the Jabberwock
Emma and Lucy are lost in Tulgey Wood, a mysterious forest full of weird and wonderful creatures. Trying to find their way home, they encounter boisterous Toves and anxious Raths, receive a warning from the refined and snobbish Borogroves about the deadly Jubjub Bird, and are stalked by the frumious Bandersnatch. Joined by intrepid but hapless knight Percy, they come face to face with the awesome Jabberwock - and then Lucy is bandersnatched! Eventually the Jabberwock's terrible secret is revealed, and the children find out what 'frumious' really means.

Bird in the Bush, A

Synopsis:
It's a hot summer's night and Bernard's stomach ache and his abiding hatred of a cooing pigeon combine to keep his whole family awake. When he determines to track the pigeon to its lair, his daughter's fiancee and his next door neighbour become entangled in his fixation. Eventually the police are called and Bernard has to face the consequences.

Chairs

Synopsis:
Marion, an enthusiastic young lecturer, is determined to foster better communication among the college staff. She enlists the help of her colleague Kath to re-arrange the chairs in the staff-room, hoping it will encourage the staff to talk to each other. Meanwhile, long-serving lecturer Mrs Douglas and newly-appointed Tessa become involved in a feud about where each should sit. Moving the chairs has unforeseen consequences; feelings are hurt and tempers rise, Kath gives up her job, and Mrs Douglas has a break-down. For some people, insignificant things can have an importance which others don't always appreciate.

Chimes, The

Synopsis:
One New Year's Eve, Trotty Veck is filled with gloom at reports in the newspaper about crime and immorality, and comes to wonder if the working class is wicked by nature. His doubts increase when encounters with Alderman Cute and MP Joseph Bowley make his daughter Meg and her fiance Richard doubtful about their forthcoming marriage, and confirm that the poor are ungrateful and have no place in society. Meeting homeless vagrant Will Fern and his orphaned niece Lilian, Trotty offers them his hospitality. That night Trotty is summoned to the church by the Bells, who in a series of visions show him how dismal the future is, with Richard becoming an alcoholic, Lilian descending into prostitution, and Meg eventually driven to contemplate suicide. In despair, Trotty confesses to all his doubts. He wakes to find that the visions are only dreams, and that the New Year has dawned happily.

Christmas Carol, A

Synopsis:
Miser Ebenezer Scrooge has no time for Christmas. The ghost of his former business partner Jacob Marley warns that if he doesn't change miserly ways he'll come to a miserable end. Scrooge is visited by the Spirits of Christmas Past, Present and Future. Glimpses of his past life, visits to the happy households of his clerk and his nephew, and fearful visions of the future persuade Scrooge to change his covetous nature.

Cricket on the Hearth, The

Synopsis:
John Peerybingle has a much younger wife, Dot. When a mysterious stranger arrives, John comes to suspect that Dot and the newcomer are secret lovers. Meanwhile, Caleb Plummer's blind daughter Bertha, in love with Caleb's tight-fisted employer Tackleton, learns that Tackleton is about to marry her friend May Fielding. Then John makes a discovery that seems to confirm his suspicions. The cricket on the hearth, considered by Dot to be her home's guardian angel, attempts to dismiss John's doubts with a series of visions. Eventually it's revealed that the mysterious stranger is Caleb's missing son Edward in disguise, who has returned to claim his childhood sweetheart May. Thanks to Dot's intervention, Edward marries May, Tackleton gives his blessing to the marriage, and John and Dot are finally reconciled.

Dracula for Beginners

Synopsis:
Jonathan Harker visits Transylvania, and meets the Count and several other strange occupants of Castle Dracula. He returns to England a changed man, and marries Mina Murray. then Mina's friend Lucy Westenra mysteriously becomes ill, and Doctor Van Helsing, a specialist in obscure diseases, is sent for. Meanwhile, Count Dracula has arrived in England. Van Helsing suspects him of being the cause of Lucy's illness and hands out crosses and garlic for protection. With vampirism eventually affecting almost everybody, a novel and little-known cure that won't frighten the children is tried out, and after much confusion Dracula is defeated. Edge, The

Synopsis:
A young man is on the roof of a high building, contemplating throwing himself over the edge. A young woman finds him there and initiates a conversation, but her readiness to slip into fantasies sounds a warning note. the young man leaves the roof, apparently having come to terms with his difficulties - but the girl is fixated with death, and finally does what she'd planned to do all along.

Flushed

Synopsis:
It's a singles night, and Jan and Meg are taking a break in the Ladies Room. Jan is criticising Tara, unaware that Tara is hiding in one of the toilet cubicles. When Tara's presence is revealed a fight ensues and Jan confesses the reason for her jealousy. Then Meg discovers that the door to the room seems to be locked, and the succeeding series of mishaps and misfortunes ruins Jan's appearance and assurance. Tara eventually manages to open the door, but on the threshold of escape they find that Meg is trapped in one of the cubicles.

Man Who Collected Women, The

Synopsis:
An adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's "the Illustrious Client" When the unscrupulous Baron Gruner persuades impressionable heiress Violet de Merville to marry him, Sir James Damery approaches Sherlock Holmes and his colleague Doctor Watson for help. With the assistance of underworld contact Shinwell Johnson, and the Baron's discarded mistress Kitty Winter, Holmes comes up trumps. Despite being assaulted and left for dead, he steals Gruner's diary of conquests and prevents the Baron adding to his collection of betrayed women, while Kitty takes her own drastic revenge.

Mazarin Stone

Synopsis:
An adaptation of 'the Adventure of the Mazarin Stone' from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's 'Case Book of Sherlock Holmes'. Master criminal Count Negretto Sylvius steals a fabulous Crown diamond - the Mazarin stone - and Sherlock Holmes determines to get it back, despite the Count's threat to murder him. Sylvius confronts the great detective in his consulting rooms at Baker Street, but is tricked by the use of a dummy into revealing the whereabouts of the precious jewel.

Synopsis:
the nonsensical and hilarious adventures of Victorian explorer Sir Henry Nearly. 'Nearly Up the Pole' sees the intrepid adventurer and his sidekick Mortimer Leeveme set out on a expedition to find the Pole - any Pole. Led by expedition expediter Jules Goudeau (aka as Jessie Boggs) and hampered by husky Rowff, they merely encounter Henry's indomitable wife Henrietta and his irritating daughter Aurora.

Pig Tale

Synopsis:
An updated re-telling of the tale of the Big Bad Wolf and the Three Little Pigs. Mummy Pig throws the Three Little Pigs out into the big wide world to seek their fortunes. they have to cope with the demands of relating to others, gathering materials, building houses, and keeping the Wolf from the door. the Narrator of the story finds he has his own problems to deal with in the shape of an insufferable Prompter and a wily and wilful Sheep.

Pocket-Sized Plays

Synopsis:
Pocket-sized Plays have been used for many years in schools and evening classes to introduce young people aged from eight to sixteen to the performance of plays and pantomimes - and people of more advanced years have had fun with them too. "Goldilocks and the Three Bears", "the Great Christmas Pudding Recipe Robbery" and "the Pied Piper" are simple to produce, with basic costumes and the minimum of properties. All can easily be performed in a classroom or on a stage, and could be produced as separate items or together during an evening of entertainment. Each runs for approximately 20 minutes.

Notes:
Goldilocks and the Three Bears and "the Great Christmas Pudding Recipe Robbery" have variable casts of 5m/f and 4m/f, while "the Pied Piper" has a variable cast of 12 m/f plus extras.

Primrose Way

Primrose Way
the ageing bag lady on the streets who opens the play is the eponymous Primrose Way, once a professional actress. As she reminisces and her story unfolds, we see her enthusiastic youthful self retracing her career in the theatre, and reliving the memories of her ambitious mother, herself a professional actress, who delights in playing a number of other characters who drift through Primrose's recollections.

Scoundrels and Stratagems or Virtue Rewarded

Synopsis:
Penniless Lady Pinchbeck wants to acquire Charity's inheritance for herself and is conspiring to have her removed from the scene, with the doubtful help of Gosling. Squire Buzzard wants to win the hand of Prudence, but she's in love with Gerald, so Buzzard is plotting to discredit his rival. Lamprey has schemes of her own, which involve the disguised Buzzard masquerading as Charity's kidnapper, and Sergeant Quickly and Constable Muggins become involved when Charity disappears. Suspicion falls on Gerald, until after a great deal of confusion and a lot of hilarity, Prudence takes a hand and everything is resolved, though not to everybody's satisfaction.

Snow Queen, The

Synopsis:
Gerda searches for her friend Kai when he's bewitched and imprisoned by the Snow Queen in her ice palace. Thicker Than Water

Synopsis:
Mrs Prince makes her son a vampire cloak for his birthday. Harold is captivated, and bites a girl at his birthday party. He decides on a career as a vampire, and his reign as the self-styled Prince of Darkness begins. As Harold grows older, he and his mother encounter horrified parents and a succession of angry teachers, until his fumbling attempts at seduction lead to the deaths of a number of women. Combined with his new career, this eventually results in Harold's downfall and his inevitable destruction in the traditional vampire manner - a stake through the heart.

Wolf Tale

Synopsis:
A re-telling of the tale of Red Riding Hood and the Wolf. Wolf tries to turn events to his own advantage, but despite the warnings of his cousin Big Bad nothing turns out the way he expects. Little Red won't co-operate, Granny's more troublesome than anticipated, the Woodland Fairy is less than helpful, a pair of infuriating Sheep complicate proceedings, and the arrival of Robin Hood is the last straw.
