Red Riding Hood

Synopsis:
What is most striking about this show is how it feels specifically written for the venue's audiences, rather than the trick of the usual panto giants with their "insert local reference here" gags aplenty. Refreshingly, writer Andrew Pollard (who plays the dame, Granny Fanny, and also directs) isn't afraid to throw a few punches with the script too. Granny Fanny owns a theatre, which locals don't realise how much they value until it is threatened with closure. Lack of funding is referenced and Scarlett, who is nicknamed 'Little Red' (played with pluckiness by Kirsty Marie Ayers), at one point even announces: "I don't care about wealth - people matter to me." The villain is Count Fracula (a delightfully dastardly Anthony Spargo) who wants to buy the theatre and the woodland surrounding it so he can merrily go fracking and make lots of money. It seems that dear Little Red and her friends are red to the core - there's even a highly amusing reference to David Cameron that makes Piggy Smalls (Alim Jayda) squeal in terror. But if it sounds like it's all too adult in content, it isn't - it's very well pitched to appeal to all age groups, but perhaps not all political persuasions. It's a very merry, socialist Christmas in Greenwich this year - only the humour is occasionally blue. There are also some old school, classic one-liners such as when Granny Fanny tells the dashing woodcutter: "There are only 30 more chopping days until Christmas." It's all great fun - the theatre must sense it has a hit on its hands. - The Stage

With swashbuckling sword fights, saucy sea shanties, skeletons, storms, seasickness and scurvy - Treasure Island has the lot. So tuck a broom under your arm, strap the budgie to your shoulder and start the chorus of "Yo Ho Ho and a bottle of Rum", as you step aboard the good ship "Hispaniola" to begin the adventure of a lifetime.
