Cafe Trippe         David, Are You there?

Cafe Trippe

Synopsis:
Cafe Trippe is the name of the play and the coffee shop in which it takes place. Along similar lines to Fawlty Towers there are 3 subplots within the play; a philandering boyfriend gets his come-uppance, an escapee from a mental hospital wreaks a bit of havoc before being recaptured and shocked fundamentalist Christians attempt to save everyone's souls with all 3 subplots reaching their climax at the same time at the end of the play in a near riot. Joe Trippe, the aging proprietor of Cafe Trippe is nearing the end of his patience with his obstreperous waitress, a young university student. there is also friction between her boyfriend and Joe Trippe. Joe also has an admirer, an aging woman customer. As other customers patronise the cafe - an obnoxious male lunatic, a victim of Parkinson's Disease and two pleasant young ladies, it becomes clear the same boyfriend is known to all three young ladies by different names. Joe, his admiring customer and their mutual friend, Nancy resolve to expose him. Making things more complicated is the lunatic, so they plan to set him up for capture as well. All this is overheard by a fundamentalist Christian who sets out to save everyone from eternal damnation. It involves luring the boyfriend to the shop at the same time as all three young ladies, luring the lunatic to the shop where the authorities can apprehend him, but at the last moment, the whole shebang is gatecrashed by half a congregation of Jehovah;s Witness type people as the final curtain closes at the end of the third act
