Thomas F. Rogers - A former director of the BYU Honors Program, Thomas F. Rogers is professor emeritus of Russian language and literature at Brigham Young University and the author of more than a score of plays, many on Mormon subjects. Four of these have been published in God's Fools (Signature Books, 1983), which also received the Association of Mormon Letters Drama Prize that same year: HUEBENER (the first literary treatment of its subject), FIRE IN THE BONES (again, the first literary treatment of its subject, the 1857 Mountain Meadows Massacre), GOD'S FOOLS (or JOURNEY TO GOLGOTHA) and REUNION. Other titles include: The SECOND PRIEST, The ANOINTED (an Old Testament narrative with music by C. Michael Perry) and The SEAGULL (translated and adapted from the Chekov play). In 1992, GENTLE BARBARIAN, FRERE LAWRENCE and CHARADES were published in a second anthology entitled 'Huebener' and Other Plays by Thomas F. Rogers. Rogers has also penned stage adaptations of Dostoevsky's novels CRIME AND PUNISHMENT and THE IDIOT, an opera libretto based on Hawthorne's THE SCARLET LETTER, a translation of Georg Buechner's WOYCZEK (produced at BYU), and scripts based on novels by local authors, Phillip Flammer and Ben Parkinson. The first of these received a BYU production, directed by Tad Danielewski, in which Rogers played the role of Marmeladov. In 1995-1996 GOD'S FOOLS was produced (in translation) by a professional repertory theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia, where Rogers was then serving as an LDS mission president. He also played the role of the American double spy Cooper in that production. During that mission he directed LDS Church members in a stage adaptation of Dostoevsky's The Brothers Karamazov and a Russian language version of HUEBENER. The play has also since been produced in Finland in the Finnish language, while a German translation still awaits forthcoming performances in that language. At BYU and in Provo, Utah, Rogers directed the premiere productions of Robert Vincek's For the Lions to Win, Thom Duncan's Matters of the Heart and Eric Samuselsen's Accommodations and in Bountiful, Utah, a production of HUEBENER. Besides numerous productions in both Russian and German for the BYU Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages, he has directed Chekhov's The Three Sisters (in German) for Deutsches Teater Salt Lake City, where he also performed as an actor, and Synge's Playboy of the Western World, Pirandello's It Is So If You Think So and Pinter's The Caretaker for the BYU Department of Theatre. Cited by Eugene England as "undoubtedly the father of modern Mormon drama," Rogers received the Mormon Arts Festival's Distinguished Achievement Award in 1998 and in 2002 a Lifetime Service Award from the Association of Mormon Letters. His published stories have appeared in volume 2, no. 2 of Sunstone, the Summer 1991 and Winter 2001 issues of Dialogue (receiving an annual Dialogue fiction award) and in the collections Christmas for the World (SLC: Aspen Books, 1991) and The Gifts of Christmas (SLC: Deseret Book Co., 1999). Rogers has served as editor of Encyclia, journal of the Utah Academy, and authored two critical monograph: 'Superfluous Men' and the Post-Stalin'thaw' (The Hague: Mouton, 1972) and Myth and Symbol in Soviet Fiction (San Francisco & New York: The Edwin Mellen Research University Press, 1992). Rogers studied at the Yale School of Drama and holds degrees from the University of Utah, Yale, and Georgetown. He has also studied theater in Poland and Russian at Moscow State University and taught at Howard University in Washington, D.C., and the University of Utah. He has intensively studied some ten languages and had extensive residences in Russia, Eastern Europe, Germany, Austria, India, China and the Middle East. He and his wife Merriam are the parents of seven children, thirty-eight grandchildren and, so far, three great grandchildren. They reside in Bountiful, Utah.

Charades

Synopsis:
A one-time stock broker, the middle-aged Danny, boasts about his mercenary adventures in Rhodesia, Nicaragua and more recently Afghanistan. He also claims to have an adopted son there, a defector from the Red Army. In Danny's absence a younger man shows up, claiming to be a Soviet Defector and Danny's actual son. We later learn that he is bent on killing Danny for betraying his mother to the KGB. Meanwhile, Danny's one certain offspring, the pregnant Gladys, accuses her father of sending her husband to Afghanistan. To absolve himself, Danny must admit his military exploits are an illusion. In doing so, however, he will betray the possibility that Gladys never had a husband. He leaves the choice to her. The other character's histories equally come into question: whether Danny's father was ever insane; whether the father's dog is still alive; whether Danny's aunt once had an affair with a Spaniard named Jesus; whether the young Russian is really Danny's son. Each must wrestle with the prospect that the authenticity of our dreams is less important than how they affect our relationship with others. This play contains adult language and situations.

Fire In The Bones

Synopsis:
A powerful drama, this play brings to light the tragic and complex circumstances which underlie the catastrophe that some 120 years ago cast a shadow on the Latter-day Saints -- the Mountain Meadows Massacre. Even today many members fear to know the particulars. In this play Brigham Young is completely exonerated as the instigator of the massacre, which is as it should have been. At the same time the play suggests the tragic dilemma into which well-meaning persons like John D. Lee are sometimes thrust -- and -- the sacrifices that a community, right or wrong, may require of them. FIRE IN THE BONES is a study in tainted conscience and mob psychology. In their temperament and their fate, its characters resemble the zealots of every society and age. Such people -- ancient or modern -- make tragedy as timely as ever.

First Trump

Synopsis:
As one by one, individuals gather on a mountaintop near Fish Lake, Idaho, they find out why they are there. The First Trump of the Resurrection has signaled the beginning of that final thousand years and families are being gathered, and assigned missions to "turn the hearts of the father to the children and the children to the fathers." But not just in a genealogical sense. It is time to link the generations together -- physically, intellectually and emotionally. A process explored in this thoughtful play that finds the ancestors and descendants of one family learning to ignore their prejudices and strive for a greater whole as they help the troubled ones among them -- only to find out that the whole is much greater than they thought it was. The little-known but infamous trial of Sylvanus Collett, an ancestor of the author, forms the center of the conflicted feelings of both the family, and the Territory of Utah.

Frere Lawrence

Synopsis:
The late private life of T. E. Lawrence (of Arabia) derives from Lawrence's posthumously published autobiography, The Mint. A military hero of mythic proportions after WW I and dutifully subject to his society's stringent Victorian mores -- so antithetical to his true nature -- he later adopts the surname Shaw and chooses anonymity as a noncommissioned serviceman, thus totally expunging his former identity, a kind of suicide. The noble, neurotic Lawrence evokes our nearly insatiable and often frustrated yearning for intimacy, or as Freud titled it, the "discontent" of "civilization"-- the perhaps most fundamental sociobiological root of everyone's "double bind," for which talent and prominence are ultimately no sublimation and often the catalytic source of a deep seated loneliness. Both with a mix of present tense and flashback (derived from Lawrence's classic memoir, The Seven Pillars of Wisdom) and through the eyes of so-called intimates, the story unfolds as a nightmare of images and aural effects that weave the fabric of the "genius" known as "Lawrence of Arabia." Contains adult language and situations.

Gentle Barbarian

Synopsis:
Based on the life of Russian author, Ivan Turgenev, this taut play is very Chekhovian in nature. Its characters are richly drawn and full of repressed sensuality. Their lives and loves interweave, creating a tapestry of Russia during the middle 1800's -- the Russia of the Tsar -- the Russia of both the privileged few and the peasant working class. It is fascinating to notice that -- despite the social upheaval that led to its eventual dissolution and once more the former USSR -- much remains as before. In its poignant irony, Turgenev's own personal story surpasses those he penned which, in Western Europe, won for him such acclaim. In the person of this humanitarian idealist, the play illustrates the hypocrisy and self-deception of many a well-intended intellectual. Contains adult situations and language.

God's Fools (or Journey To Golgotha)

Synopsis:
This play commemorates all who were ever persecuted by totalitarian regimes--not because they opposed the systems under which they found themselves, but because they valued religious freedom above political expediency, and as believers, they pledged their loyalty to God, not other men. The character of Mitja, the protagonist, was suggested by the case of Sergej Kourdakov, a young defector with a similar background, who, in 1973, is believed to have been murdered by the KGB in the foothills of Los Angeles-- ostensibly a suicide. Brief, mild language present in the play.

Good Man Is Hard To Find, A

Synopsis:
A family in the deep south -- mother, father, grandmother, juvenile son and daughter -- take an innocent excursion into the countryside from which none of them is fated to return. Their nemesis is an escaped convict, the Misfit, who, with his two young accomplices, dispatches each of them in turn. The last of his victims, the grandmother, pleads for mercy. As she does so, her own shallowness and hypocrisy come to light. The Misfit in turn reprimands his accomplices for taking pleasure in the executions. In its enigmatic way, this one act play -- based on Flannery O'Connor's celebrated story of the same name -- raises hard questions about mortality, goodness and Christian salvation. This is a particularly difficult play. It is dark, nearly demonic, yet almost prescient in the light that the original story was written back in the 1950s and this type of 'event' happens all too frequently in the 21st Century. Some may wonder why it is included here, among "family" offerings. It is definately NOT for children. But it is a vital piece of theatre that examines the Human condition and sends out a plea for reason and sanity. It is not entertainment, it is enlightenment.

Huebener

Synopsis:
If one is allowed only a few peak experiences in life, one for me was watching the text emerge of Thomas Rogers' play Huebener. The work is a product of our local culture which has universal meaning. It invites all to consider models in addition to the pioneer legacy, to apply out thinking to contemporary issues, in this case the competing loyalty between freedom and obedience. Douglas D. Alder -- President, Dixie College. While aware of the risk to his life, Helmuth Huebener persisted in asserting his conscience. This fearless Latter-day Saint begins a campaign against Hitler's propaganda machine. In this play we will witness his tragic story. "Huebener has to be the most brilliant piece of theatre from a Utah author to date -- a haunting, moving, powerful drama of ethics." -- Mary Dickson, Salt Lake Tribune.

Idiot, The

Synopsis:
How would the world react if its Savior again suddenly appeared in the guise of just another mortal? Although his darkest novel, The Idiot is imbued with a deep vein of hilarious humor--another irony. Its tragicomedy is near operatic and great theatre. As the critic George Steiner once observed, Dostoevsky possessed "the most natural dramatic temperament since Shakespeare." The Idiot was possibly Dostoevsky's most personal literary expression. He wrote it while (like General Ivolgin) pursuing his gambling addiction in Dresden, Germany, and Basel, Switzerland. Like Myshkin, he was an epileptic. As he wrote The Idiot, the psychological strain brought on several grand mal seizures. The novel's discussion of Holbein's painting of Christ's corpse was prompted by D's viewing it in the famed Dresden Art Gallery, which was fire bombed in WW II.

Petunia Passes

Synopsis:
Finances and family activities are examined when the 'family car' is totaled and the family faces no transportation. What is essential? What can be done without? What is best to be sacrificed? Reunion

Synopsis:
The setting is a middle-class LDS home in Salt Lake City on a General Conference weekend. The three eldest children, now living away from home have come together to celebrate the missionary farewell of their youngest brother, Billy. They are also concerned about their father who is dying of cancer. Seagull, The

Synopsis:
THE SEAGULL is a slice-of-life drama set in the Russian countryside at the end of the 19th century. The cast of characters is dissatisfied with their lives. Some desire love. Some desire success. Some desire artistic genius. No one, however, ever seems to attain happiness. Some critics view The Seagull as a tragic play about eternally unhappy people. Others see it as a humorous albeit bitter satire, poking fun at human folly.

Second Priest, The

Synopsis:
This play poses the pacifist dilemma. Set in an unspecified locale, now, or sometime in the furure, it's idealistic hero, Agen, refuses to take the lives of his political enemies. In consequence, his wife dies and he loses his memory. As, years later, he recovers from his amnesia, he proves the perfect candidate for his nation's highest office. Manipulated by his minister and boyhood friend, Cantri, while negotiating a binding peace with a foreign power, Agen unintentionally abets the death of his only child. In an effort to enforce the treaty he's already paid such a high price for, he finally attempts, in a public address, to dissuade his nation from developing any more deadly weapons. In order to stop him, Cantri orders Agen's assasination. Ironically, a man's attempt to combat war and bloodshed by disavowing violence has led to, first, the deaths of his wife and son, and then his own.
