Best, The

Synopsis:
the BEST, a long-lost screenplay about George Best by Jack Rosenthal, will have its world premiere on stage at the Lass O Gowrie pub in Manchester on Tuesday 12 March, as part of Manchester Irish Festival. Maureen Lipman welcomed the first ever performance of her late husband's screenplay the Best, after watching rehearsals at the Lass O'Gowrie. I had never even read until two weeks ago, now to watch it being performed by a group of truly gifted actors. It was very moving for me but also very funny and enlightening about the nature of hubris. It's really good. I didn't expect to go to a reading of Jack's play in a pub in Manchester and it turn my heart over. But it did." Producer and landlord of the Lass O'Gowrie Gareth Kavanagh said: "A lost Jack Rosenthal script about George Best? That's just Manchester royalty squared for us and we're thrilled to be bringing this amazing script back to life in time for the Manchester Irish Festival!" - http://coronationstreetupdates.blogspot.co.uk/2013/03/jack-rosenthal-play-in-manchester-pub.php

Dreyfus

Synopsis:
it tells the story of a group of small-time amateur actors in 1930s Poland trying to come to terms with the 1890s military scandal in Paris, the one that unleashed a wave of anti-Semitism which, it could be argued, was still in evidence 50 years later in Vichy France. the trouble is that in the end Grumberg doesn't seem to want to face any of those issues fully enough; he is more concerned with an update of Shakespeare's rustic players in A Midsummer Night's Dream in which we now get Harry Towb as the bully-Bottom figure, a local barber intent on hijacking the play, along with some very good jokes about the ways in which amateur Dramatic societies are the same the world over and always have been. But the serious side of Dreyfus, and what it says about the ways of a world about to go up in the flames of the late 1930s, sits uneasily alongside the Yiddish sentimentality of a kind of non-musical Fiddler on the Roof
Sheridan Morley, Spectator,

Smash!

Smash!
Smash is Jack Rosenthal's hilarious but scathing look at the journey to get a musical from page to stage, complete with a cantankerous composer, a fantasist lyricist, a neophyte female novelist turned playwright, a cocksure director and a bombastic producer. Producer Theo has assembled a crack transatlantic team to launch the new musical Whatever Happened to Tomorrow? Liz, a successful British novelist, has written the book, her compatriot Mike the lyrics, legendary Broadway composer Bebe Kaiser has created the score and the staging rests in the capable hands of hit US director Stacey. What could possibly go wrong? Quite a bit, it turns out, as egos clash, tempers fray and artistic ideals vie with financial reality
