Birth of Theater, The

Synopsis:
A dramatic recreation of how many theater historians believe theater arose, as a reenactment of the hunt. To break up the humdrum of life in their camp, tribal elders give four hunters the task, of showing the whole clan how they killed a giant bear. Since these seasoned, burly hunters have no idea of how to "play" the hunt, they invent, before our eyes the theater. They discover acting, directing, costuming and props. It is a magical moment for actors and audiences as the hunt is brought to life and the great bear is "slain" again.

Synopsis:
Told in a reader's theatre format, this clever play runs the gamut of emotions over several years while we follow the lives in the Landy family. We are privy to their tradition of trading "Christmas Letters;" those photocopied informational letters which keep the members of the family generally updated. But this is no ordinary family. A wealthy woman who enjoys her toys loses everything and must rediscover her role in life. A faithful nun loses her religion but finds happiness with her female roommate. A young drifter determined to make his mark in showbiz must first stop sponging off his relatives. Each clan member becomes involved with his/her own life while in the meantime, the family drifts further and further apart. All the while, the eldest Landy, Molly, gripes, "These letters are such a bother. Why can't we all just get together?" A beautiful Christmas message is skillfully written between the lines.

Jew of Bologna, The

Synopsis:
Now in modern play form, The Jew of Bologna depicts the most sensational clash of religions in history. The church takes Edgardo Mortara, when he was a boy of six from his family, because a Catholic serving girl in the employ of the Jewish Mortara family baptized him when he was an infant. The abduction of this child throws the Mortara family into a maelstrom of torture, as Edgardo's father, Solomone, and Mother Marianna, attempt to wrench their son, Edgardo, away from Papal authorities. The case becomes a worldwide concern as this small boy evolves into a cause celebre. Prevented from ever returning to his Jewish Family, ironically, Edgardo grows into an apologist for the church that separated him from his family. Eventually, Edgardo becomes a priest and cuts his ties with his Jewish past to the heartache of his family.

Judah's Daughter

Synopsis:
Here is a new theatrical form the author calls an eurythmy. It is a system of movements to words with the actors wearing full face masks. The piece may also be done as a conventional play without masks. The story of Judah and his daughters, one legitimate and raised as an orthodox Jew and the other illegitimate and raised as a Roman Catholic, is a family tragedy. Both girls fall in love with the same man, a gentile. The tug of war that ensues destroys Judah and his daughter. The heart felt conclusion brings tears to the eyes of all who see this sensitive work.

Narnia

Narnia
The first and most famous story of The Chronicles of Narnia has become a musical presentation of this unique, enchanted world filled with creatures and spirits of myth and fable, both good and evil, demonic and transcendent. The principal inhabitants, however, are the intelligent talking animals ruled by the majestic King Aslan, the great lion of Narnia. Though Aslan is often absent from the land (so that his very existence is doubted by some), he returns when the need for him is greatest. And entering Narnia at a moment of high adventure are some childrenplucked from our world in unexpected ways to help Narnia and to learn from their Narnia odyssey lessons of courage, unselfishness and wisdom that will help them grow. Narnia wants to sing, and from the excitement of the opening song, "Aslan's on the Move," to the joy of "Narnia (You Can't Imagine)," your spirits will soar with all those in Narnia. Area staging.

Synopsis:
Vemo and Olam discover music by listening to heartbeats while Zarli, Vemo's wife, sleeps. They both sneak in and listen to her heartbeat to see if women and men's heartbeats are the same. Zarli awakens and is concerned that perhaps they were doing something naughty. Vemo and Olam have a difficult time explaining that they are just inventing music, which is a variation on the rhythm of the human heart. As the two men begin to play"music" on skins and shells with goose bones, Zarli's body begins to move with the sounds. Zarli decides she likes music. Vemo and Olam do not reveal to Zarli that they find her "dancing" erotic, but we can see that they do.

Princess Antigone

Synopsis:
A newly conceived version of the classic Greek tale. After the battle for the kingdom of Thebes, King Creon declares that one of the two brothers who fought this civil war would remain unburied as a punishment for starting the conflict and as a warning to any other warrior who plots against the state. Antigone, whose brother is left unburied for dogs and vultures to consume, cannot violate her conscience and the rites of burial, which will allow her dead brother's spirit to rest. Going against the state and King Creon, Antigone buries the body of her brother. A classic battle of the individual against the state ensues and spins to its tragic finale.

Notes:
The chorus in this brand new version comprises seven ballads in short form and long. They can be either chanted or sung to the music, which is included in the play script. Professionals, college or high school groups can easily produce this play.

Leon foolishly tells Marysyas all that Peter has said. Leon thinks all of Peter's compliments are exaggerations and treats Peter's feelings as a big joke. But alas, Marysyas slowly succumbs to the flattery. All of this culminates in the final seduction when Marysyas and Peter finally embrace in ecstasy.

Sleep in Chains: Jekyll's Nightmare

Synopsis:
Jekyll's Nightmare is a brand new variation on the classic Robert Lewis Stevenson story of the duality of good and evil. In this innovative retelling, good and evil outcrop, too, in the other characters. Jekyll's wife, Grace, has a sister, Pamela, who is the "black sheep" of the family. Even the Reverend Danvers, father-in-law to the Doctor, has a shadowy past. The play deftly illustrates the denouement, the never-ending presence of darkness - as Pamela initiates the corruption of another soul, continuing the eternal cycle.

Notes:
Sleep in Chains: Jekyll's Nightmare was originally presented under the titleDr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by the Curran Repertory Company in New York City. It was directed by Ken Terrell.

Jimmy (the Arm) Younkers, after many successful prior years of big-league pitching stardom, and extravagant living, has decided to "hold-out" on signing the reduced contract resulting from his failing record of recent seasons. But while Jimmy's athletic powers are waning, his destructive lifestyle has yet to run its course. Having walked out on his wife and children he continues to pursue romantic assignations with ladies near and far; he borrows money he knows he will never repay; he indulges every imPulse and has no hesitation in dragging others down with him; and in general, he refuses to admit that the days of glory are over. That Pig Morin

That Pig Morin
A comedy that is both funny and thought provoking. Monsieur Morin, a homely looking man, gets an urge, while riding on a train, to kiss a young girl. He does and is arrested and disgraced. To try to prevent the girl from taking the matter to court, he enlists the help of his best friend, Labarbe. He sends Labarbe to see the girl, Henriette, with the aim of dissuading her from pressing the matter. However, Labarbe, because he is handsome, can take every liberty he pleases with Henriette, and she loves it. At the wry conclusion we see how physical attractiveness is rewarded and unattractiveness punished. Published in Necklace & Other Short Stories.

Will

Synopsis:
Based on the writings of Robert Louis Stevenson, this haunting short play by an award-winning playwright tells the story of how the Angel of Death encourages Will to look upon his life - his selfish love - before he's taken away. We see a Young Will who enacts the memory of Old Will and we see Marjory his always love. He never gives in to the joy marriage, but instead holds true to a selfish philosophy. The characters are deeply felt; the effect is overpowering.

Women In Congress

Women In Congress
Hilarious version of Aristophanes' Greek classic. Praxagora, the leader of the women of Athens, plots to take over the government which is run by men and replace it with a new order run by women. Praxagora has the women of Athens dress up as men and vote in congress to turn over the reins of leadership to the women. When this measure is passed, the women unanimously vote Praxagora in as the Chief Executrix. Praxagora and the women then proceed to turn the Greek world topsy turvy legislating free love, male female role reversal and a communistic utopia that brings on the unlikely proceedings to a funny festive conclusion.
