Beauty and the Beast

Beauty and the Beast
celebrate the fickle world of the fairytale as fortunes fail, dreams are dashed and love is tested to the limits. Faced with a bitter choice, can one man leave his beloved daughter at the hands of a beast? In order to save her father, Belle must cross the threshold into a grown up world. Can she find the courage to enter the beast's castle? This energetic and fast moving production brings real spark to a classic folktale. While storms rage and wolves howl a single rose will change the fate of one family.

Butterfly Kiss

Synopsis:
the writer has created a mysterious but revealing piece of theatre that reflects the hopes and fears of the rising generation. Charles Way explains: Our dreams are often wildly fantastical, but they are nearly all composed of elements derived from our own experience. It was this thought that lead me to wonder about the dreams of teenagers. What might they reveal about the concerns of the dreamers? Consequently a number of dream workshops with the youth theatre provided the material for the play.

Notes:
the experimental production is written by international Award-winning playwright Charles Way, And explores the nightly dreams of young people.

Cinderella

Cinderella
The play is set in Germany at the time when a young Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was trying to become a court composer. His music is key to this adaptation of the famous tale, and his composers baton is not after all dissimilar to a magic wand. Thus the healing power of art and love is explored in this timeless romance. Indeed time itself, as in music, is key to the emotional sequence of events as the young Cinderella tries to overcome grief and find a new life, in rapidly changing times.

Ghosts of Scrooge, The

Synopsis:
Based, of course, on A Christmas Carol, this text uses the famous story to argue with Dickens about the plausibility of a man like Scrooge becoming nice overnight. Here it is the will of Bob Cratchit and wife plus some politically motivated ghosts that engineer the turnabout in Scrooges character. None of the famous scenes are lost however and the adaptation stays true to Dickens beginning, middle and cathartic end.

Hard Times

Hard Times
the prosperity of Coketown, dominated by hardline educationalist Thomas Gradgrind and the overbearing businessman Josiah Bounderby, is built on the cotton mills where thousands of men and women slave away. Gradgrind's doctrine, which banishes imagination and trumpets only the importance of facts and material progress, damages his children Louisa and Tom, leading to scandal and disaster. Hard Times will be a promenade production, with the audience being taken through the mill as the performance progresses, and will be performed in the atmosphEric setting of Murrays' Mills, a restored Victorian mill in Ancoats, the old industrial quarter of Manchester.

Synopsis:
Gwent theatre commissioned this Charles Way play to introduce youngsters to some aspects of the Shakespeare play in language they can easily understand. Two strolling players on their way to perform at Elsinore Castle. they rehearse, showing how adept they are at dumb show, meloDramatic miming that always pleases the groundlings. the haunted Hamlet intercepts the duo, giving them his version of a play in their repertoire that he hopes will catch the conscience of his uncle King Claudius, thus revealing him to be a royal regicide. It does, of course, although we do not progress to the fatal consequences.

Tinderbox, The

Synopsis:
Jonas, a handsome young soldier discovers treasure beyond his wildest dreams when he finds a tinderbox which gives him power beyond other mortals. the Tinderbox is an epic journey tale, from rags to riches, though war, political intrigue, the depths of despair to the heights of love and passion. It is a classic everyman tale inspired by the Hans Andersen story but not a copy of it. This version of the tale reflects Andersens own life as he searched for fame and fortune. Jonas adventures explore friendship, betrayal and the importance of staying true to ones values. Exciting and touching, the story includes a fantastical range of characters- a witch, a king, a beautiful opera singer and a dog with eyes as big as saucers.
