Frank & Ferdinand

Frank & Ferdinand
a village in a war-ravaged country wakes to find that one hundred and thirty children have vanished. Only four are left: Otto, aloysius, Sarah and Flora. Interviewed by a Military Inquiry, each child tells the events of the night before. But their accounts seem to differ. Who is the elusive Sebastian and why does the Inquiry's depiction of him keep changing from delinquent to charmer and back again? What's real, and what's fairy-tale? It's just . . . if we had peace . . . I wonder what colours I'd see with you. If all we had was the normal things I long for, just sky and school and music, like in stories, then who would you be, Sebastian? a short, satirical mystery about the suppression of truth, the making of myths, and how we see what we want to see, not what's there.

Gabriel

Gabriel
In an unprecedented musical and theatrical event, Alison Balsom, one of the world's finest trumpeters, and award-winning writer Samuel Adamson explore the notion that the natural (valveless) trumpet was the supreme musical instrument of the Restoration. With music by Purcell and Handel, the text brings to the stage real and imagined characters including Mary II and Queen Anne as well as the trumpet-makers, musicians, composers, patrons and audiences of the teeming musical scene in late seventeenthcentury London. Intersecting plays, instrumentals, songs and poems will bring to life this glorious pageant of the Baroque period, the time when the trumpet began to 'sing', and express in its uniquely celebratory fashion the turning points in human experience: birth, war, love and death.

Light Princess, The

Light Princess, The
Once, in opposing kingdoms lived a princess and a prince who had lost their mothers. Althea, unable to cry, became light with grief and floated, and so was locked away. Digby became so heavy-hearted that he could never smile, and so was trained as a warrior. One day, he declares war. Althea is forced out of hiding and down to ground but, in defiance of her father, she escapes, only to encounter the solemn prince on contested land. Beside a lake the warring heirs begin a passionate and illicit affair. But for Althea to find real love, she must first confront the world's darkness and face her own deepest fears.

Uncle Vanya

Synopsis:
Set on a crumbling country estate, Uncle Vanya is the tale of two obsessive love affairs that lead nowhere, and a flirtation that brings disaster. The irascible Vanya and his niece Sonya have managed the estate on behalf of their relative, a renowned Professor for the last twenty-five years. Now retired, the Professor and his beautiful young wife come to visit, throwing the household into disarray, igniting hidden passions and old grudges. Family ties are tested further when the ageing and gout-ridden Professor announces his plans to sell the estate and live off the proceeds in the city. By turns comic, tragic, romantic, and wistful, Chekhov's play is an unforgettable study of unfulfilled dreams and unrequited love. One of his four great masterpieces written on the eve of the twentieth century, it features a feast of subtle comic portraits of a family at logger heads with each other and the world around them, that still has resonance at the start of another new century.
