Isle Aichinger was born on November 1st 1921 in Vienna along with her twin Helga. She was refused a place at university because she was half Jewish. After the War she did get to study medicine but later abandoned her studies to finish writing the novel "The Greater Hope". She married poet Gunter Eich.
