Ewart was born in Cwmgiedd and now lives in Ystradgynlais. He began writing professionally in 1967, when Dial Rudolph Valentino One One, his first attempt at writing for television, was produced as a Wednesday Play on BBC1. The first play commissioned by H.T.V, Omri's Burning, is now in the National Film archives, as representing one of the best television plays of 1969. From then on, Ewart's television output has been divided between single plays, adaptations, contributing to, and originating, series and serials, and plays for radio. He has a total of 120 credits to his name. Ewart is a full member of academi.
