Claudia allen's play Hanging Fire premiered in 2004 at Victory Gardens Theater in a co-world premiere with Florida Stage. author of over thirty plays, she has been widely produced around the country. Her other premieres at Victory Gardens include Winter and Fossils (both starring Julie Harris), Cahoots (Starring Sharon Gless), Hannah Free, Deed of Trust, and the Joseph Jefferson award-winning plays Still Waters and the Long awaited. She received a Trailblazer award in 2000 from Bailiwick Rep. In 1999, Chicago Magazine named allen "Best Playwright." Her play anthology She's always Liked the Girls Best was a finalist for an American Library association award and a Lammie. Her play Unspoken Prayers was a finalist for the 2003 Susan Smith Blackburn Prize. allen was a recipient of the Chicago adapt Disability Arts and Culture award. She teaches playwriting at the University of Chicago, Lake Forest College and the Victory Gardens Training Center. Recently, she is currently co-executive producer and screenwriter of a film adaptation of her play Hannah Free, filming in Chicago, starring Sharon Gless. Claudia has completed a new play, O'Beast (written by her inner angry fat kid) and she's working on an adaptation of a Willa Cather novel and threatening to do a musical version of her play Movie Queens. Her Jeff-nominated I Sailed with Magellan is being published by Dramatists Play Service.

Growing up on Chicago's Southside in the 1950s and '60s, Perry is the oldest son of a working-class Polish family. His frugal father, Sir, works in a factory and collects car parts off the street to sell in his spare time. Perry's younger brother, Mick, is a constant nuisance, and their mother, Moms, somehow manages to hold the house together. Perry's adventures take him from adolescence to young adulthood: dodging high-speed traffic with his father; stealing orchids from the Northside in order to finance a trip to Mexico; and singing in neighborhood bars at the behest of his Uncle Lefty, a washed-up ex-musician and veteran of the Korean War. a dreamer, Perry inherits his restless qualities from Lefty, whose death marks the end of Perry's childhood. a wide-ranging coming-of-age story, I SaILeD WITH MaGeLLaN celebrates the colorful, hardscrabble life that inspires a boy to embark on his own voyage of discovery.

Ripe Conditions

Ripe Conditions
Set in rural Michigan, Ripe Conditions is about Lester and Buster, a pair of bumbling brothers, and ann, the long-lost love of their lives, who eloped with their kid brother years ago only to return to their shambling farm as an attractive and eligible widow. Buster, who bathes once a month, whether he needs it or not, keeps the farm going with a cash crop that is smokable but not exactly legal. Lester, nursing his illnesses and complaining, hasn't been the same since Buster shot him in the leg years ago in a dispute over their mutual love, ann. then, in order to gain more sympathy, Lester shot himself several more times! Old feelings are reignited in the brawling brothers, while the radio reports "ripe conditions" for a tornado-which hits as they are making overtures to ann with their own brand of country-boy charm. Winter

Winter
Winter is a funny, lyrical, yet harrowing look at old age. For five years since his stroke, Mark has been confined to a wheelchair. Miriam, his wife of 50 years, has worn herself out caring for him. their marriage is fraying from the strain. But then the "wrong one" dies first and Mark finds himself in the nursing home he's always dreaded. Once Mark faces the worst thing he can imagine-Miriam's death and the home-he is surprised to discover that he can still enjoy the small joys in life. When Dotha, Mark's childhood girlfriend, is admitted to the home, she's so depressed she refuses to speak. This time it's Mark's turn to be the caregiver and help Dotha rediscover her own small joys.
