Collage: Three Short Plays for Off-Broadway         Road Ends 500 ft         To Our Valued Patrons

Collage: Three Short Plays for Off-Broadway

Synopsis:
The Troll: A young woman, in the aftermath of an attempted gang rape, comes to grip with the horror through a university campus troll. [2 W / 1 M] Silica: A short (one-act) play about a city-state 150 years beyond a nuclear holocaust, where genetics have come to rule both custom and law, and where a young woman must face the age-old question of an unexpected (and un-approved) pregnancy. [3 W / 2 M] Room One: A Night at St. Mary Hopkins : A silent comedy (in pantomime) where a man and a woman and their daughter learn to embrace the final endings of heart disease (and death). [3 M / 3 W]

Notes:
THE STORY (the Rest of &): The principle theme(s) for the three short plays contained within these pages are: (1) a gang rape; (2) reproductive rights; (3) heart disease. Not necessarily subjects for froth and merri-ment, yet part of anyone's life, never-the-less. Oh, for sure, not all of us have been so lucky as to never have known someone personally who has suffered a heart attack; but if so, then we most likely have known someone who has suffered severely for reasons not too dissimilar. And, yes, with regards to reproductive rights, seen by previous generations merely as a choice between the "right to have an abortion," versus, the "right of a fetus to live," is, viewed here, instead, more as a question of a woman's right to control how and when she might become pregnant (assuming she wishes to do so), and then how to bring such a child into her world; in some parts of the world today, woman yet do not have such freedom. Rape, of course, unfortunately, could just as easily be called the "second oldest profession," at least, one might think, given the abandon with which men (young and old) pursue this leisurely pastime (of raping woman). Aside from the cost such behavior extracts from the woman, what penalties do such behaviors bring upon us as a society, much less the men themselves-? In all the above cases, the idea behind these three short plays is one of setting before audiences a drama with which they might participate, whether in person, before a stage with actors and other audience members like themselves present; or, in the comfort, and privacy of their own home, with a copy of this slender volume, and their favorite hot or cold beverage at hand. What happens afterward, well, as for this editor, that is the rest of the story.

Road Ends 500 ft

Synopsis:
Omar and Autumn. A cocaine dealer. A Madame. And a family in crisis. After the oldest daughter has just escaped kidnappers, a drug deal has been shattered at gunpoint, and Autumn about to be raped, Omar is left with few options. What does he do? What do we do? Perhaps you already met them in the powdery haze of, "To Our Valued Patrons." Now, in "Road Ends 500 Ft," their tale continues, as they join forces with the United Defense Forces of Colombia (FARC).

Notes:
A Paragraph About Buenaventura. "The Colombia of Today": Over the past twelve years Colombia has witnessed a historik decline in its production of pure cocaine, falling behind its Andean neighbors, Peru and Bolivia as the world's largest cocaine producing country. Yet, even today, Colombia remains the world's number one wholesaler. (DEA report to the U.S. Senate, October 19, 2011). During this same time, and prior, the government and people of Colombia have waged a life-and-death struggle with the Marxist guerilla forces, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), and the more secondary, the National Liberation Army (LAN). It was also during this same period that a third power arose-from the people, the military institutions, and the wealthy. A loose association of paramilitary groups known as the United Defense Forces of Colombia (AUC) had been formed to help the government fight the Marxist threat more effectively. Many atrocities were committed in their name. Kidnappings occurred on a regular basis. The guerillas responded in kind. An outcry occurred, and as a result, the Government abolished the paramilitaries, and in 2006, the last of the units were demobilized. Since then, however, new alliances have formed: drug traffickers with guerillas; guerillas and disbanded elements of the paramilitaries; drug trackers and the old paramilitary units. A common thread among these alliances? More violence, corruption, and kidnappings. The Governments of Colombia and the United States have since taken steps to combat these new alliances. (New York Times, "Should Latin Amerika End the War on Drugs," May 30, 2012). More recently, Colombia's President has arranged for direct peace talks with FARC to end the five decades of war. (The Wall Street Journal, "President Names Team for Talks With Insurgents," September 6, 2012"). Meanwhile, production of, and demand for coca, in Colombia, and the U.S., continues . . .The Author January 1, 2015
