Napoli

Napoli

Synopsis:
Three generations are thrown back together after war torn decisions have kept them apart for more than 20 years. Raising questions of truth, identity and forgiveness, NaPOLI tells one family's story that stretches across history and continent. With central sonic visual storytelling, NaPOLI uses washing lines to weave together three storylines from 1944, 1978 and present day. as the momentum of the play builds the different eras begin to collide, culminating with a kaleidoscopic clash as the three main protagonists meet back on the rooftop in Naples where it all began in 1944. NaPOLI is based on the writer's own experience in Yorkshire and Italy and that of her Grandparents, who met in Naples during the Second World War. It is a story about heritage and identity and questions if ghosts of our family's past, shape our present and challenge our future. The potential of using washing lines to tell stories stretching across generations and nations, first struck the writer whilst living in Rome 11 years ago. She observed how much of a family's life and history can be traced through their lines of clothes and wondered if you could use such a motif to explore a family's relationship to their 'motherland', it's language and to each other. NaPOLI is conceived to connect diverse art forms with culturally and socially diverse artists, the aim being to create a truly multi-faceted process and performance.
