Incorruptible Flesh - (Inner Pig)

Synopsis:
A collaborative performance in two parts, Ron Athey and Dominic Johnson explore Self-Obliteration, Inner Pigginess, and Mystical Grandiosity. Starting with a palate of ideas about sex, death and sparkle, they take these themes into the California deserts in the heat of August, to create rituals of transubstantiation in magickal excess. In 1996, Ron Athey and Lawrence Steger began researching the collaborative performance, Incorruptible Flesh. Like wax dummy saints blessed with the miracle of incorruptible flesh, the thought was that there was much injecting and powdering to be done to fight off corrosion. The morbidity of the piece was driven by the shared, long-term HIV+ status of Athey and Steger, healthy and sick respectively. The intercut performance vignettes liberally used camp and melodrama, and a righteous submersion in Stegers drollness. In 2006, Steger now dead, Athey continued the project displayed as a living corpse in Incorruptible Flesh (Il Luminous), and again as Incorruptible Flesh (Dissociative Sparkle). Continuing the collaborative process, Athey presents Incorruptible Flesh (Inner Pig). Oracles never speak: only echoes of messages, too vague to discern. The flesh is quickening with love's neglected waters. Against rigid landscapes, the pains we carry tighten into brilliance.

Incorruptible Flesh (A Work in Progress)

Synopsis:
His first work, "Incorruptible Flesh (A Work in Progress)," was a collaboration with artist Lawrence Steger, who later died of AIDS in 1999. "Incorruptible Flesh" was shaped by scenarios of nursing, healing practices (like psychic surgery), and grief ritual. The performance was filled with darkly stunning images: one body looking after another, a body beautiful in decay, the miraculous corpse that never decays. "Incorruptible Flesh" was originally commissioned by the Institute of Contemporary Art in Glasgow.

Incorruptible Flesh: Dissociated Sparkle

Synopsis:
This updated work extends the original performance's closing image into a durational performance. Athey positioned himself on a bed of metal bars, impaled on a baseball bat, with his face fixed into a grimace by hooks tied to the bed's frame. For five hours, visitors came to watch and were invited to touch him.

Incorruptible Flesh: Messianic Remains

Synopsis:
This performance is the fourth installation in the Incorruptible Flesh series. Messianic Remains continues Athey's exploration of the continuation of his own post-AIDS body. Previous installments were done in collaboration with the late Lawrence Steger (who died of AIDS in 1999), and in the new millennium with London-based artist Dominic Johnson. Between 1996 and 2007, performances took place in Glasgow, Chelsea Theatre in London, and at the funerals of Leigh Bowery in New York and Amsterdam. As in earlier works in the series, Athey rides the grandiose myth of enlightenment that only the face of death may reveal.

Incorruptible Flesh: Perpetual Wound

Synopsis:
It took its inspiration from a Sophocles play about a disgraced warrior, exiled and cursed with a wound that never heals. A boy warrior is sent to steal the old, exiled man's magic bow, but is overcome by feeling for the elder warrior and heals him. In Athey and Johnson's collaboration, however, the wound is not healed but passed on to the boy.

Judas Cradle, The

Synopsis:
From the legendary US performance artist Ron Athey and operatic soprano/musicologist Juliana Snapper comes a highly original new work, The Judas Cradle. In the past we've seen Athey confronting the stigma and iconography of HIV/AIDS, public sex, self-harm, incest and suicide with physically and emotionally confrontational productions including 'Deliverance' and Joyce . Now in The Judas Cradle he and Snapper perform an operatic drama using both body and voice that explores the history of torture and personal suffering: from the choreographed 'pornography' of Abu Ghraib, the autos de fe of the Spanish Inquisition, and finally into the melancholic s realm; making an extraordinary spectacle from the politics of torture and release. Warning: The Judas Cradle contains nudity and scenes and depictions of torture which may be offensive to some people.
