Melanie has written poetry and short stories from a young age, and upon joining Hull University to study Drama in 2010, decided to attempt some scriptwriting. In her first year of university, her first full length play was selected alongside five other shows to be performed at the Edinburgh Fringe festival 2011 by Z Theatre Company. Since then, she has had work performed at the Hull University, the Old Vic Tunnels, Hull Truck Studio theatre, as well as a collection of emerging performances spaces in Hull, and was a shortlisted writer for 'Write to Shine' in association with The National Youth Theatre. Melanie was offered her first playwriting commission in February 2012 for the Hull branch of the national charity The Samaritans, and the subsequent play 'Call Me, Love Me' ran for three nights as a public performance at her university, raising funds and awareness for the charity. Melanie most enjoys working collaboratively with directors and theatre companies as a present and engaged 'writer in the room', and has previously worked with Middle Child Theatre, Parkbench Poets, Synesthetic Collective and Ensemble52. After a successful '24 hour play' at Hull University, she was pleased to be asked to extend the original 20 minute script of 'Brush' for Synesthetic Collective's debut at the Edinburgh Fringe 2013. Melanie also has a keen interest in the critique of theatre and performance, and has some experience as an arts journalist, working extensively at the 2012 Fringe interviewing acts for an online publication, as well as being Editor of the Hull University Drama department magazine, The Grapevine, and hosting a breakfast radio show for Jam Radio. In September 2013, Melanie embarks on her post-graduate studies in Creative Writing at Oxford University.
