Camille
all I ever wanted was a man who wouldn't ask me questions across the foyer of a crowded theatre, a handsome young man catches sight of the most expensive prostitute in town. When they meet, a mutual obsession is ignited - one that tears both their worlds apart. Set amidst the glittering splendours and miseries of 19th century Paris, Camille has scandalised and fascinated audiences and theatres, cinemas and opera houses for over a hundred and fifty years. Neil Bartlett's new version returns to the original novel for its shockingly frank and emotional portrayal of a woman who can afford anything - except to fall in love.

Christmas Carol, A
Oh, but he was a squeezing, wrenching, scraping, grasping kind of a Scrooge; a clutching, covetous old sinner. . . Using only Charles Dickens' extraordinary words and a chameleon ensemble of eight actors, Neil Bartlett's 'a Christmas Carol' brings a boldly theatrical imagination to bear on a classic story.

d(ARE) / Here Be Lions
Synopsis:
d(ARE) / Here Be Lions was borne out of a collaboration between French artist, choreographer and dancer Sandrine Buring, and playwright and director Stephane Olry. It is inspired by Buring's and Olry's artist residencies at the Hopital de la Roche-Guyon, a hospital for children with multiple and severe neurological difficulties in France. The piece fuses dance and immersive theatre to explore with beauty and subtlety the experiences, thoughts and sensations of these enigmatic young people. There will be dance from inside a suspended glass laboratory bell jar, and voices from eight different characters attempting to vocalise disability. These two mediums movement and text are presented to the audience as ways in which to imagine a world that is often deemed unimaginable. Like the Latin cartographers who wrote in the spaces of the yet unexplored deserts, hic sunt leones: here are the lions.
Notes:
d(ARE) / Here Be Lions received rave reviews at the Festival d'Avignon in 2012 and, profoundly moved by the experience, Theatre of Europe approached the Print Room to bring this delicate and uplifting creation to the UK, in an English translation by Neil Bartlett.

For Alfonso
Synopsis:
In 1888, Oscar Wilde published a children's story called the Remarkable Rocket, about a firework who fails to understand the true nature of love. On 27 September 1894, he took a boy called alfonso Conway (whom he'd picked up on Worthing Pier) back to a hotel room in Brighton. Six months later, alfonso was in a solicitor's office, being forced to give evidence.

Girl I Left Behind Me, The
. . . I'm sure I'm not the only one who's thinking; hang on a minute; I seem to have the knack of pleasing ladies. In trousers? With short hair? In public? Was that allowed? Indeed it was.' a cool and contemporary look at one of the most intriguing aspects of musical theatre just what is it that makes a woman in trousers so appealing? accompanied by a piano, mezzo-soprano Jessica Walker dons a few well-chosen items of male attire, giving a supremely well-sung performance that conjures up an entire world, from the swaggering cross-dressers of the Victorian Music Hall to the ambiguous boy-heroes of Mozart and Strauss, to the back-room bulldykes of the Harlem Renaissance. Commissioned and produced by Opera North Projects with the Southbank Centre touring partner Welcome to Yorkshire. the Girl I Left Behind Me is a provocative, flirtatious, personal one woman-guide which deliciously recalls a forgotten chapter of female performance.

Great Expectations
Using only Charles Dickens' extraordinary words and a chameleon ensemble of eight actors, Neil Bartlett's powerful stage version of this much-loved story brings its settings and characters to thrilling theatrical life. From its opening image of little Pip, alone on the windswept marshes, to the haunted darkness of mad Miss Haversham's cobweb-strewn lair, this brand-new adaptation especially commissioned by aberystwyth Arts Centre takes its audience on a journey right to the heart of Dickens' great exploration of childhood terrors and hopes - and of adult dreams and regrets.

Helpless
although his mainstream career has recently included majorwork for the RSC and the National, the five new pieces collected here show just how close playwright and director Neil Bartlett has stayed to the radical queer cultural roots that first brought him to prominence in the early 1980s. Commissioned to be performed in spaces as various as South London's notorious Vauxhall Tavern, Brighton's theatre Royal and the pulpit of Westminster abbey, these hit-and-run Dramatic monologues bring all of his trademark wit and passion to bear on the issues that run throughout his work the power of love, and the necessity for anger. Together, they make up a trenchantly personal take on what it feels like to have spent nearly thirty years standing up and speaking one's mind.

In Extremis / De Profundis
On the night of 24 March 1895, Mrs Robinson, a society palm-reader, agreed to see Oscar Wilde in her London flat. Wilde's lover, Lord alfred Douglas, Bosie', was urging him to sue the Marquis of Queensberry (Bosie's father) for criminal libel. But Wilde's friends, wary of Queensberry's power, were warning him to leave town. In extremis reveals the strange turmoil of that night, as a man at the height of his fame turns to a complete stranger for advice about a potentially life-changing decision. First presented at the National theatre alongside De Profundis to mark the centenary of Oscar Wilde's death.

Oliver Twist
In this powerful new adaptation of Dickens' classic novel, Neil Bartlett brings back to the theatre one of the angriest, funniest and most deeply felt stories about childhood ever written. Taking inspiration from the vivid world of Victorian music-hall, thirteen actors conjure up a host of unforgettable characters - Fagin, Nancy, Bill Sikes, the artful Dodger and, of course, little Oliver himself. Dickens' original words bring the dark underbelly of nineteenth-century London back to thrilling life - a city teeming with images of danger and fear, of innocence and of hope - all seen through the eyes of an astonished child.

Opening Of the Mouth, The
the King James Version of the Bible (KJV) is a foundation stone of the english language. the KJV was composed as a collective project and written to be spoken. Sixty-Six Books has been created, in the spirit of the original, in the same way. Pulpit to print; stage to page; mediated through many forms oral and written, the KJV has, since its inception, been a fundamental part of written and spoken english. This is a work that has travelled to every continent of the globe. It has been shared as a melodic instrument of inspiration, illumination and mutual understanding; and it has also been wielded as a tool of colonial oppression. Sixty-Six Books is a fresh interpretation of the KJV for the new millennium, celebrating and challenging the traditions and achievements of this great work on the occasion of its 400th anniversary. the curators of this project have gathered together a formidable and inspiring line-up of the best established and emerging writing talent to produce a new version of the KJV for thetwenty-first century. each writer has created anew a book of the KJV - as prose, poetry, Drama, performance, song, or ground-breaking digital form. each writer has spoken back to the KJV with untrammeled inventiveness of the imagination. the voices of Sixty-Six Books, drawn from across five continents, innovate, transmute, transpose, reinvent and talk back to four hundredyears of history. all the works that make up Sixty-Six Books are written to be spoken. Culminating in major performance events at the Bush theatre and Westminster abbey in 2011 in London, Sixty-Six Books is a contribution towards the mutual curiosity, tolerance, and force of collective enterprise and shared humanity that characterizes the international and ancient Arts of writing and spoken performance

Picture Of Dorian Gray, The
Believe me, no civilised man ever regrets a pleasure. . .As London slides from one century into the next, a young man is cursed with the uncanny ability to remain both young and beautiful while descending into a life of heartless debauchery. With its glittering dialogue, provocative imagery and radical questioning of sexual and moral freedoms all brought sharply into focus by this brand-new adaptation, Oscar Wildes infamous parable has lost none of its power to provoke and disturb.
Notes:
From Oscar Wilde. Director And librettist Neil Bartlett, music by Nicolas Bloomfield. A new stage version of Wilde's black-hearted parable was commissioned by and first produced at the Abbey Theatre, Ireland's national theatre in the autumn season of 2012.

Prince Of Homburg, The
Tell me, please - is this a dream?'the night before he leads his troops into battle, the prince of Homburg strips off his uniform and goes sleepwalking. Moonstruck, his mind races with a young man's fantasies - love, ambition and victory. But when the morning comes, a single reckless act of disobediance sets in motion a chain of events that leads inexorable to the one thing he never dreamt would happen; his own death.

Remarkable Rocket, The
although his mainstream career has recently included majorwork for the RSC and the National, the five new pieces collected here show just how close playwright and director Neil Bartlett has stayed to the radical queer cultural roots that first brought him to prominence in the early 1980s.

Right Pair, A
Synopsis:
Bette Bourne and Paul Shaw have been partners both offstage and on since the late 1970s. In this whistle stop tour of their life together they explore some of their favourite scenes, some obscure gems and some things completely new. Join them for the triumph and despair, the giddy high heel moments and occasional down at heel moments of what it means to be A Right Pair.
Notes:
the show was put together with the help of Neil Bartlett and features some classic moments from gay theatre troupe Bloolips and from Gloria theatre Company (Neil Bartlett and Nicolas Bloomfield) together with excerpts from Resident Alien (Bette Bourne as Quentin Crisp) Oscar Wilde, Cavafy and Dorothy Parker - all interwoven with, and reflecting on, the story of their life together as a gay couple - plus some stunning hats and costume surprises.

Threesome, The
Paris, 1870. adultery ought to be a serious business. . . But it's hard to keep your dignity when the cleaning lady has a fireman in your kitchen and she suspects that something is up. Not to mention the fact that your lover is not only stuck halfway up a drainpipe but is also your husband's very best friend. and as for the blackmailing taxi driver - he knows everything! the Threesome is a feast of finely tuned extra-marital mayhem from the master of French farce.
