Synopsis:
In early 2011, I saw a performance of Gounod's Romeo et Juliette at the Metropolitan Opera. In that production, Romeo drank his poison, Juliet stabbed herself - then they both came back to life and sang a beautiful aria together. I joked with my husband on our walk home: what are they supposed to be - undead? I stopped in my tracks. Oh my god, I said. I have to write a play called Romeo and Juliet and Zombies.I re-read Shakespeare's play the next day and the concept clicked. Plot lines became suggestive: Friar Lawrence's drug makes Juliet seem dead; the Searchers of the Town quarantine people for fear of a mysterious contagion; the graveyard is loose and unfirm with digging up of graves. I dove into historical research and started writing. The parents of this play are Shakespeare on one side and modern zombie movies on the other. If this seems an unlikely marriage, I take comfort in remembering that Shakespeare was an omnivore. He gave us the supernatural horror of Macbeth, the gore of Titus, the magic of Midsummer; the pathos of Hamlet and the slapstick of Bottomand he imbued it all with the same marvelous humanity. I have relished the chance to bring back the dead of Romeo and Juliet, and I have tried to do so with Shakespearean humanism and cinematic gusto. It's time to open the tomb. I hope you like what's inside. - Melody Bates
