Free Radical
Synopsis:
It is crunch time for the Rogans. Now that Justine, their youngest, has finally left home Vanessa and Brendan need to face up to life alone together - or else choose to go their separate ways. Brendan, sacked from his job as anchor on a television sports show, is languishing at home, getting under Vanessa's feet as she attempts to resurrect her career as an architect. Felix Hertzog, an intimate friend during their university years, arrives back in his home town for the first time in over twenty years. He has a busy week ahead, delivering the keynote address at a UN Conference, accepting an honorary doctorate from his alma mater and presiding over the launch of his latest novel at the International Writers' Festival. However, Felix's triumphant return is compromised by the unwelcome presence of Liu, his 'personal assistant', who has disregarded his instructions and followed him from New York. The past is memory and memory is incomplete, something like a jigsaw puzzle with pieces missing and others seeming not to belong. Vanessa, Brendan and Felix each have their secrets so, although the piecing together of their past might inform the present, they discover that it is no clear guide for their speculations concerning the future. After the events of this week, it seems life will never be quite the same again - for any of them.
