Daniel Berrigan was born on May 9th 1921, in Virginia, MinnesotA. When he left high school he joined a strict Jesuit seminary and spent twenty years studying theology. With his brother Philip and Thomas Merton he formed an inter faith coalition against the Vietnam War. Philip was arrested for non-violent protest and jailed for six years. Daniel went to Hanoi to negotiate the release of three American prisoners. He was branded a traitor by J Edgar Hoover and the FBI. He was prosecuted for burning draft records and sentenced to three years in jail but went on the run; turning up at meetings around the US. eventually he was captured and sent to prison.
