Molotov

Synopsis:
Molotov is, as the sub-title of Simon Blake's new play states, a love story. Of sorts. But love is not the main theme explored, rather it's tagged on rather unconvincingly and provides a kind of limp twist to a play which essentially themes itself around questions of identity and escapism. Nor is it, as the title presupposes, a play which is particularly explosive, but trundles towards a rather predictable conclusion which echoes the homily that you can try pretending to be somebody you're not and wear your various identities like changes of new clothes, but it won't make you happy nor will it bring you that elusive thing called love. George Mcallister plays thirty-something Mark Rothko. By day Rothko works at a dead end job gathering data and interviewing victims of rail and road disasters. By night he dreams of writing a novel, though, again predictably, this never gets off the ground. He is single, lonely and, rather hopelessly, lost. then he meets Jake (Kevin O'Donohoe) who, inadvertently, saved Rothko's life when they were both involved in a train accident some years earlier. Jake, though believed by everyone to be dead, actually escaped the wreckage and has meanwhile forged a new identity for himself, leaving behind a wife. Jake offers Rothko the chance to do the same.

Signal-Man, The

Synopsis:
In Dickens tale of mortal terror, a walker befriends a signal-man who is plagued by ghostly apparitions. A spectre of guilt haunts this lonely stretch of North Eastern railway, revealing the dark history of its old Victorian tunnels.

Notes:
Part of The Locker. The Signal-Man first appeared as part of the Mugby Junction short story collection in 1866. Originally presented in the Christmas edition of All the Year Round, Dickens used this periodical to express his beliefs in social reform. Now Simon Blake offers a chilling reminder of Dickens own themes, and explores the dangers of over-stretching the services on which we all rely.
