Mandrake Root, The

Synopsis:
A bawdy carry on up the Renaissance, The Mandrake Root is a faithful adaption of Machiavelli's comedy La Mandragola. Witten in 1518 and a huge hit when first performed it is a hilarious tale of cunning, deceit and desire, providing an alternative view of a man whose name has become synonymous with political intrigue and treachery. The fast paced story takes place over 24-hours and its main theme is deception, with each character believing that he or she is shrewder than the next. A young man Callimaco is overcome by the beauty of the young and virtuous wife of an old and foolish lawyer and with the help of his servant and a dubious, self-interested fixer he is determined to bed her. Knowing that the couple are desperate for a child he masquerades as a doctor suggesting that the surest way for the wife to conceive is through taking a potion of Mandrake Root, but the treatment has a fatal side effect and the first man to sleep with her will die, therefore an unsuspecting soul must be kidnapped, to sleep with her and of course, that man will be a disguised Callimaco.
